I've never hula hooped before (well, not since being a child), so I wanted a beginner's fitness hoop - this is perfect. I thought 40" sounded giant, but I read online that a good guide is to measure from the ground to about an inch or two above your belly button, and if you are more experienced, measure just to your belly button or slightly above. This is because the bigger the hoop, the slower it goes and the easier it is. Well, I'm 5'5" and this was perfect. It is quite heavy, but the foam has meant that I've had no bruising. The box suggests that for the first week, you do a max of three minutes a day. I time myself by doing it to a video of a song called Hula Hoop by Stella Mwangi (not the best song in the world but it has a really good rhythm to rotate to) which is just over three mins so it allows me a few seconds if I drop the hoop. Three mins is just enough to start to get my heart going. It then says to use 3-5 mins for the following two weeks, and then for 5-20 mins up to twice a day thereafter. Waist feels a little tighter after one week, so I'm sticking with it.

I was looking for something fun and interesting to add to my home exercise regime, and came across "hooping." After doing some reading on the internet, and watching a multitude of you tube videos I had learned a couple of things: 1) for fitness hooping, or hoop dance, you need a weighted hoop (this makes it easier to control) and 2) it needs to be much bigger than you imagine, approximately to your waist or navel.

I initially chose this hoop because it comes in bits, and would be easy to store. It is also marketed as a "beginner" hoop, weighing 1.2kg.

The hoop comes in 8 segments, and locks together very easily (haven't tried taking it apart yet - it gets too much use!). There are also some health and safety guidelines and instructions on how to fit the segments together and take apart. Unfortunately there are no guidelines on how to get started hooping, so back to you tube it was...

The hoop is well made, and the foam padding is consistent across all sections, giving a smooth and comfortable finish.

On my first 3 minute session (as advised, 3 minutes twice a day for the first week, building up to 6 minutes in the second week, and up to 20 minutes (and beyond) after the third week) my first thoughts were... oooh that is much harder than it looks, and ouch!

I'm very overweight, and have poor muscle tone across my chest, abdomen and thighs, and the weight of the hoop rolling over these areas makes the skin tender to touch (hence the starting with only a few minutes at a time).

If you haven't hooped before, or as an adult, you may find it frustrating at first, as you drop or lose the hoop time and again, however you soon pick up the correct movement and rhythm.

I am a new hooper but I am picking it up quite easily and I have not had any bruising which I hear is common with some other hoops. So far I am happy with this hoop and the delivery was quick too.

At first I thought I would never get the hang of using the hoop. But gradually it got easier and now I use it every day for around 10 to 15 minutes, which is enough. There was some bruising initially, but that does fade and I am hoping to see a reduction in my waist measurements soon!

I found this to be an excellent hoop that I have recommended to all my fellow ladies morning gym members. Most mastered it in a few tries even none hoopers. The service was excellent too. I ordered it one afternoon and was amazed when it arrived the following morning.

Ok, so I used to love hooping but we're talking about a while ago... This arrived (really quickly, great service), put it together quickly (easy to do), tried to hoop and the hoop just fell to the floor. Tried again, dropped it again. I could not do it!!! Started to think "Oh no not another waste of money fitness idea"... but persevered. Found some online instructions on the basics, such as how to place your feet, not to move your head etc. Kept trying.... Kept dropping the hoop. Refused to give up and decided to give it 15 minutes of trying for a week and see how far I got.

The first day I could only do about 4 hoops. The next day I managed 10. By the end of the week I was up to about 50. I soon stopped counting, and can now do my daily 15-20 minutes with though a break. I've been doing about 15 minutes, about 5 days a week so far, and have lost a total of about 5cm from waist/upper hips/thighs. It's not loads but I feel more shapely and that my posture is improved, plus I haven't been dieting so didn't expect to lose a lot.

So - real results, good fun, doesn't take long, not expensive, even a busy excercise phobic can do it and keep it up.... Would thoroughly recommend this hoop. But if you buy it and can't do it at first don't give up, you'll soon get it!
