Product Description

Ruth Rendell, Sunday Telegraph
'Triumphant'

Review

‘Rose Tremain has restored the historical novel to its rightful place of honour…her most dazzling triumph is her analysis of the cynical, complex, twisty personality of Charles II…It is nothing less than superb’

( New York Times Book Review )

‘Stimulating and imaginative…A mass of historical detail is incorporated with admirable lightness of touch’

(Miranda Seymour, Sunday Times )

‘To be moved and impressed by a novel, and yet so entertained, is rare’

(Fay Weldon )

5.0 out of 5 stars An amusing, enoyable, and very human story., 25 Jan 2009
By FAMOUS NAME (UNITED KINGDOM) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)

I purchased a book by Rose Tremain ('Music & Silence') some years ago, and although I don't always find books I've read easy to recall - even good ones, this title had stuck in my mind, and I had remembered that it was good, and so when I began to read 'Restoration', I at least knew it would be an enjoyable read. Ironically, I had purchased the DVD of the movie based on this novel some time in fact before I actually purchased the book - but never watched it, and so I ended up reading the book first. I intend to watch the movie this evening since finishing the last chapter from the novel just last night - will be interesting!

This is a very human story about a man called 'Robert Merivel', who though starts out as coming across as a bit of a 'Court Jester' character, and one not to be taken too seriously, develops into a very likeable and deep personality who even claims sympathy and understanding from the Reader.

This is a very 'clever' novel that includes some famous incidents in history - but also displays a personal touch from an individual who is affected by all that happens - and in particular those around him.

Though 'Merival' lusts after women, it is quite clear that the true 'romantic' love of his life is most definitely the King whom he'd happily become a doormat for, rather than be ignored completely - a classic example of true love at its most sincere!

A truly wonderful read!

(A Review of the movie will follow - I do hope it does not disappoint after my so enjoying the book!)

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece, 7 Jun 2009
I first read this book ten years ago, and it really did something lasting to me. It's quite simply one of the best novels I have ever read. Rose Tremain is always a brilliant, precise and poised writer and I hope one day she will be awarded the Booker prize that she so richly deserves. Until I read Restoration I was not a great fan of historical fiction, but a friend thrust it at me - and I'm glad she did, because the wonderful, humane story of the intensely fallible and lovable Robert Merivel, has become firmly lodged in my heart. If I were a writer, this is the book I would most like to have written. As a reader, it's one I'm grateful to have read. And I will treasure it always.
