Product Description

Meet Kate Shugak, tougher than your average heroine. An award-winning crime series set in Alaska.

KATE SHUGAK is a native Aleut working as a private investigator in Alaska. She's 5 foot 1 inch tall, carries a scar that runs from ear to ear across her throat and owns half-wolf, half-husky dog named Mutt. Resourceful, strong-willed, defiant, Kate is tougher than your average heroine - and she needs to be to survive the worst the Alaskan wilds can throw at her.

RESTLESS IN THE GRAVEWhen Alaskan billionaire Finn Grant is killed after someone sabotages the engine on his Piper plane, the question is not who had the motive, but rather who did not...

Grant was not a popular man, but he was a successful one. His latest venture, an air freight service, was booming.. But what kind of freight was he moving, and where? The answers lead Kate to her most challenging case yet, from the fateful wreckage to family secrets to full-scale conspiracy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Restless - but be QUIET, I'm listening 3 Oct 2012
Format:Audio CD
I was given a copy of this audio book and I wasn't totally convinced that I wanted to listen rather than read. A series of abridged and disappointing books - years ago - had put me off the format.

I've now listened to this book twice. It's 9 CDs long, I know what's going to happen but I'm gripped by both Ms Stabenow's understated and sharp humour, her excellent prose and talent for story telling as well as Ms Gavin's supreme reading.

This book is unabridged. It brings together two of Ms Stabenow's loved characters, Kate from the Park (+Mutt) and Liam from the back end of nowhere with Wy. They complement each other and annoy the heck out of each other and it's gripping reading. I took to waiting into the car for the end of a segment of approx 5 minutes before dashing into the house to listen to the next segment. Bathroom has been polished, kitchen is sparkling and I think I may be hooked on unabridged audio books.

I do listen to kindle-to-audio in the car, and while that's great (unabridged, mobile, no more expensive) I would love to listen to some more books properly narrated.

3.0 out of 5 stars Restless in the Grave 17 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love the Kate Shugak series and was really looking forward to this one. However, I found the storyline a little bland and fragmented. I think this was due to having all of the characters from both the Shugak and Liam Campbell stories involved. It was ok but not the strongest story in a great series.

I love this series and hate finishing one of her books as it seems forever before the next one is published. Dana Stabenow - write faster!

Another excellent murder mystery by Dana Stabenow, set in Alaksa and featuring the feisty native Alaskan PI Kate Shugak and her trusty hound Mutt ("She's only half wolf"). Kindle is a great platform for aspiring mystery writers but so many of them leave a lot to be desired, in particular they are over written with too much tedious detail. Established prize winning author Dana Stabenow shows how it should be done with another fast moving adventure for her tough heroine. The Alaskan settings are so vivid you can almost taste the snow yet the state's sad and sleazy side is not overlooked either, with the litany of alcohol related petty crimes plaguing the hard pressed State troopers, now being phoned in thick and fast by cell phone. The plot moves along fast too keeping you in just enough doubt about who the goodies and the baddies might be. Real page turner. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Restless in the Grave: 19 8 Feb 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Dana Stabenow does it again, a plot with more twists and turns than a Grand Prix at Monaco. It is so good that an author gets stronger as you read more. To often writers can become formulaic in a series and then you can see where the story is going, not this author. Absolutely the best one yet and now I find the next is due soon, not soon enough for me. This has been a joy.

5.0 out of 5 stars totally absorbing 11 Jan 2013

I loved this book, it is a fantastic story well told. I can assure those who don't believe that people can live like this in this day and age that they need to make a visit to a community like this, then reread the story. You will recognise characters from these places, and while the body count may not be so high (I hope!), tempers can get quite heated. I have loved the whole series, but each book can be read as a stand alone story.

By L. J. Roberts TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
First Sentence: They kept it simple. They could cut off his right hand, or he could use it to learn how to fire the weapon they gave him.

PI Kate Shugak is surprised to receive a call from State Trooper Liam Campbell. An even bigger surprise is being offered a job to investigate a murder; however, one of the possible suspects is Campbell's wife. Traveling to Niniltana and working undercover doesn't seem so bad, except someone is taking strong exception to her presence and making that clear in very physical ways. In spite of a handsome actor who is there, is soon becomes clear that the case of murder is only a small part of much bigger, uglier crimes.

As wonderful as are the characters of Kate and Mutt, it was a delight to have Liam Campbell and the cantankerous Moses, seer and master of tai-chi, back in the mix. There is no question but that Stabenow creates wonderful characters; good and bad.

Stabenow's voice and humor bring humanity and balance to serious mysteries..."Kate marched them [the NNA board members] through old business like Alexander went through Asia...". At the same time, this book did not, in any way, lack for suspense.

Dana Stabenow is an Alaskan who knows her state and its people. Her descriptions are powerful and create a very strong sense of place. Yet she also recognizes that life in Alaska is not for everyone..."Jim asked her [a perpetrator being extradited to another state] why she had confessed to charges that were five years old and three thousand miles away. "I'm tired of Alaskan winters." She said.". She also presents a very good look at the challenges, both in types of crimes and lack of manpower, policing Alaska.
