Product Description

February 1945. Europe is in ruins and the Red Army is searing its way across Germany’s eastern marches, revenging itself upon a petrified population. The war is over, but for some the fight for survival is only just beginning.

Alix, the aristocratic daughter of a German resistance fighter, is alone and desperate to flee before the Reds come. But when a ferocious snowstorm descends she must return to the shelter of her abandoned ancestral home. There, she is shocked to find her childhood sweetheart Gregor. As old passions are rekindled, a couple break into the house to hide – the man, dressed in Gestapo uniform, is a stranger, but his companion is altogether more familiar.

By morning, the blizzard has died down but the Reds are back. The woman and her Nazi escort are dead, and Gregor has vanished. Alone and terrified, Alix runs for her life, and embarks upon an extraordinary and heartbreaking journey.

It will take sixty years and the fall of another empire – Communism – before the riddles of that fateful night can be deciphered.

Restitution is a memorable novel about love and betrayal, hatred and heroism – a reminder that, even in the worst of times, the most courageous acts of kindness are possible.

Eliza Graham's second novel is even more compelling than the first. On one level an action story about Alix, an aristocratic German girl, fleeing the avenging Red Army in 1945, it also explores the backgound of her family and their friends. Not all the Germans are Nazis,not all the Junkers are inflexible stereotypes. Alix's mother is an actress with a bohemian circle of friends. These can prove dangerous, particularly where there is Jewish blood but also where friends have Gestapo contacts. The story moves to and from 1920s Vienna, where the breakup of the Hapsburg Empire means some Austrians are now exiles from what is now Northern Italy and others have identity crises and mixed loyalties. Alix's childhood friend is one of these and his escape to Russian-occupied Poland leads to imprisonment in the Gulags until he can prove his use to the Soviets. In all, a well researched, engrossing story.

If you've read her first book, Playing With The Moon, you'll know Eliza Graham has a real knack for weaving together different characters' points of view, different time frames, and also little-known historical details.

She's done it again in Restitution, this time bringing to life a love story set against the events of WWII. I especially like the way the novel sweeps across Europe, and across the decades. Another strong point is that Graham eschews the classic/cliched war scenes in favour of events at the fringes of the conflict. It brings a huge historical event onto a personal level, and helps make this a really believable story. All this is underlined by Graham's strong prose - the dialogue, in particular, is some of the most well-crafted and economical I've come across, and it's a pleasure to read.

Great second novel from an author to watch!

Eliza Graham tells an engrossing and moving story. Her detailed knowledge of life in east Germany towards the end of the Second World War and after is astonishing. She reveals the same thorough research when her story takes her back to 1916 and the years between the wars. The book is also an educational read, describing aspects of the war that tend to be overlooked. They are a reminder that the enemy is seldom, if ever, the only perpetrator of evil. Nevertheless, it is a human and uplifting story.
