Product Description

“The best, funniest, most revealing inside look at the restaurant biz since Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential.” —Jay McInerney

With a new foreword by Mario Batali

Joe Bastianich is unquestionably one of the most successful restaurateurs in America—if not the world. So how did a nice Italian boy from Queens turn his passion for food and wine into an empire? In Restaurant Man, Joe charts a remarkable journey that first began in his parents’ neighborhood eatery. Along the way, he shares fascinating stories about his establishments and his superstar chef par tners—his mother, Lidia Bastianich, and Mario Batali.

Ever since Anthony Bourdain whet literary palates with Kitchen Confidential, restaurant memoirs have been mainstays of the bestseller lists. Serving up equal parts rock ’n’ roll and hard-ass business reality, Restaurant Man is a compelling ragu-to-riches chronicle that foodies, businessmen, and aspiring restauranteurs alike will be hankering to read.

Do you want to open your own restaurant? Really...? Have you considered taking professional help for that? Many people dream about doing it, a lot try it, many regret it and quite a lot lose a lot of money in the process. Yet a few do succeed...

Here, to help show you that it is possible, self-made restauranteur Joe Bastianich explains a bit about how he managed to turn his passion for food and good wine into a business empire. Of course there is no one-size-fits-all approach and it is good to hear dissenting, differing and converging views and opinions. Views and opinions there is not a shortage of here. What you are getting is quite an uncensored overview of the U.S. restaurant scene and a bit of a unhampered look at some notorious chefs and restaurateurs to boot.

Straight away the author pours cold water on many dreams. Or is it he drops a massive f-load of reality straight into your lap? You decide! The pace continues like a machine gun, telling you about pitfalls, ways you will be ripped off, how you will find it hard. Do you even dare turn past the first couple of pages, especially when you see there is a LOT more of this to come.

This is not stuff you will learn at business school, catering college or some other fancy course. It is straight to the knuckle, been there-done that-got the t-shirt and a kick in the spuds for good measure material. Even if you have not thought about opening a restaurant this is still an enthralling read. Compelling like watching some home video on television where you know that pain is just about to come and WALLOP! There it is.

It is written with the frankness of people in this profession and a great sense of humour. Having been in this profession, I know every bit he mentions to be true.

His chapter on wines even moved me.

The book entertained and taught me so much, I felt the need to tell Mr. Bastianich how good his book was!
