'No Rest' is arguably NMA's finest album, the most consistent, passionate work Justin Sullivan and the lads have released before or since. No Rest captures the righteous anger of the dispossessed, smalltown frustration and search for identity characteristic of their work, and spits it out in punchy, bass-heavy four minute gothic punk bites. From the opening lines of 'Frightened' sneering at the belief that 'the world outside your bolted door is evil', to the stark percussive lament to the death of the industrial North, 'No Greater Love', this paints as bleak a picture of Thatcher's Britain as you are likely to find. As a slice of musical history, as a snapshot of a band at their finest, and as an album which makes you want to cry AND revolt, I cannot recommend this album highly enough, particularly to Killing Joke and Joy Division fans (who probably have it already ;))

New Model Army don't get the credit they deserve. To many people, they are gloomy, earnest goths and no more. This is a pity as they are consummate songwriters with a consistent worldview and some surprisingly catchy tunes. No Rest For The Wicked is their second album and the one that brought them to a - marginally - wider audience. Well, it did give them a minor hit with "No Rest". They annoyed the Top Of The Pops people by insisting on playing it live and wearing t-shirts with "Only stupid bastards use heroin" on them. The parent album does not sound remotely like the cliched idea of an "80s record". It is stripped down, catchy, tuneful and fast paced. There's passion aplenty in songs like "No Rest" and "Better Than Them", but surprising humour in "Young Gifted And Skint" ("that's where it in't") and a palpable sense of old-fashioned decency in "Drag It Down". Best of all is "My Country" - a fine example of how to be patriotic without being a right-wing bigot. Still, if all this sounds a bit worthy, all these songs are set to galloping bass, danceable drums and hummable tunes. There is nothing dour about this stuff. Worth taking a chance on.

This is one of the defining albums of the 1980s for me. New Model Army have their own unique style - caustic bass lines over thumping drum beats, tuneful guitar riffs and some very intelligent lyrics delivered in a style that grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go until the songs are over!

where vengeance hangs, no rest lets one drop; the best nma 11 April 1999

it has been a while since slade signed my vinyl at the electric banana in pittsburgh. however, it is not forgotten. now, a tad older, with a tad more of a job, and band, i still dream of creating the transcendent mirages created in "no rest for the wicked". it is, in this novice's opinion, the most incorporative and, in certain ways, the most creative album of nma's discography. it has proven, to me, to be of substantial influence, along with eno and coltrane. for the nma virgin, it is a mix between u2's "unforgettable fire" and pure early punk. it is melodic and extremely intelligent. and, to these ears, beautiful.

There is no discussion about NMA's best album among the fans: Thunder & Consolation.
Back in the mid 90's I had a chance to buy both CD's: T&C and No Rest for the Wicked, but I decided to buy only T&C and went home.
It was a sleepless night thinking about NRftW I left at the CD store.
The next morning, before the store opening, I was there with my regrets for not acquiring NRftW.
It is tremendous - I'd say colossal!! It may not have T&C hits, but its attitude is unpairable.... a must listening artwork.

good 80 punk 7 May 2007

new model army was a very underrated 80's punk band. Good songs, good lyrics. Maybe they were bigger in UK than in US. This is maybe their best CD.

No Rst for the wicked 31 July 2000
By Sebastian-Patrick Sommer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is the music of my youth - raw and full of inspiration. The riffs and drums are powerful and the lyrics touch your soul. Like all the NMA CDs you will enjoy it forever - believe me.
