Product Description

SIX BOOKS IN ONE VOLUME. A voluminous history of the four clubs that have borne the famous name: South Liverpool Football Club. At 300,000+ words, this is one of the largest club histories ever written. This is actually six separate books in one hardback volume. The book is based entirely on primary source research: including more than 2,000 pages of original club documents from 1912-1994, more than 1,000 official home programmes from 1913-91, hundreds of newspaper reports from 1894-1994, and interviews with more than 150 former South Liverpool players, managers, and directors. Jawad has also spoken to descendants of six of the original 12 directors who formed South Liverpool from African Royal in 1910, and who formed New Brighton from South Liverpool in 1921. NEVER BEFORE HAS A NON-LEAGUE CLUB BENEFITED FROM SUCH AN IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS. NOTE: the illustration is indicative; the book has no dust cover.

The first thing you notice about this book is the size of it. We're talking here of a serious study. The detail is incredible but this never detracts from what is a fast-paced and sharply written book, which is sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, but always moving forward. I liken this book to the old Rock Family Trees you used to get on television.

There have been four clubs by the name of South Liverpool. All are interlinked in some way, and they involve other clubs, like African Royal and New Brighton.

The author managed to locate some of the original club documents, which makes his research important, and he has drawn on his rather large collection of football memorabilia. Best of all, he has interviewed all the important figures in the history of the different South Liverpool clubs. There is a lot of history here, a lot of analysis, a lot of genealogy, and a lot of biography. The author deploys everything so well.

The book is 300,000 words, which makes it about four times the size of an average football book. From a personal point of view, I have never read so many words so quickly, and enjoyed it so much. I've read a lot of books about non-League football, but nothing as extensive, or as good, or as important as this one.

There is a happy ending because South Liverpool re-formed and are doing well in local amateur football. The author praises the new club's attempts keep the spiritual element of the club alive.

The book is value for money and highly recommended.
