Abandon all hope of following the plot, since the silence of the hero-around whom the opera revolves-makes the action seem even more convoluted on disc than it is on stage. Instead enjoy the dazzling partnership of Maxwell Davies and his orchestra and singers, who enter fully into the chameleon-like spirit of the work, traversing gospel music, jazz dances and jingles with breathtaking fluency. A sense of tension runs through the piece from beginning to end, conveying the real anger that feeds Maxwell Davies's satirical vision.
