Product Description

One woman opens her heart and life to an extraordinary God, stopping at nothing to take him at his word. Susie Howe mobilizes others to fight injustice against the poorest of the world's poor: those with HIV, orphans, street children, and persecuted 'child witches'. We go on a sweeping journey from a mud hut in remote Zimbabwe, down the back streets of Manila in the Philippines; from the jungles of the Democratic Republic of Congo to war-torn northern Uganda.

Meet some of the unsung heroes who bring life, hope and transformation to individuals and whole communities.

A call to arms... 18 April 2011
By D. Thurgood VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I've read books like this one before. In fact, I've just finished one, Little Princes by Conor Grennan, where the tale is told of a young man who finds himself in Nepal and sets out to rescue traffiked children. However, I've never been moved by a story the way that this one did. The opening chapter hits you so hard, that whatever follows must be read, if only to explain how on earth a candidate for prima ballerina found herself cradling a woman dying of AIDS in squalor in Zimbabwe. At this point, I should mention that I have met the author, Susie Howe, and mistakenly thought I knew her, just a little. This brief autobiography is so wild and extreme in its depth and reach, that I now feel that I knew nothing about Susie Howe whatsoever.

The book encompasses most of Susie's life, from her childhood in London, through her schooling, obsession with ballet (and her considerable skill at it) before subsequently becoming a nurse at the vanguard of palliative care for individuals with AIDS, when no one knew anything about this new and horrific disease. But it's the chapters set in Zimbabwe and DRC that most grabbed me, as they're countries whose political history I have followed closely over recent years. Susie takes you beyond the wars and the politics to the real people 'on the ground'. She set up a revolution in orphan care in Zimbabwe, and is now the founder and director of the Bethany Children's Trust, an organisation very close to my heart.

I should point out here that this book is also the story of how Christianity impacted Susie and how she was set on the road to helping others. But I would strongly suggest that you don't let this put you off, as to do so would be to miss out on a fabulous story, written from the heart. I hope that all who read it are challenged about their own response to children in suffering, just as I have been.

How nice to read a Christian book and to be challenged in this way. After reading this book, my first thought was not " What an amazing woman Susie Howe is" (which is evidently true)" I could never be as amazing as her" but rather, "What an amazing God." I did not feel inferior. I did not feel I was in the presence of 'Super-Christians'. The overriding theme in this book is one of ordinary people stepping out in faith and obedience to an extraordinary God. God has put different calls on different people and I'm sure not everyone has been called to advocacy for children at risk, as Susie Howe has, but this book makes me want to find out what my calling is, what my dream is. And then dare to step out and follow it.

The life changing moment, the pivotal ultimately motivational moment that Susie experienced in Africa, is where God shows her up close and personally, how cruel life in Africa can be. Susie shouts "What are you going to do about this God". "No" says God, "The question is, Susie, what are you going to do about it?" This book charts the events of Susie Howes' life that brought her up to that moment, and then what happened after. After she did indeed decide to 'do something about it'. It is not just her story either, it involves loads of other people involved in helping children at risk, both as part of her team and projects she has helped to set up. One of my favourite moments is of Ambuyu Makusha helping 10yr old Etina, an orphan and rape victim. Armed with nothing more than wool and knitting needles, and a whole sack load of time and love, Ambuyu sets about helping Etina to speak after months of silence. Very moving.

It doesn't take long to read, it goes along at a fair old pace. And if I'm honest it could have done with being a bit longer in order to enjoy some of the detail of such an amazing journey with God. Anyway - I'm off to find out what makes me angry, what makes me passionate, what makes me excited. Who knows, maybe God put those feelings there and I need to do something about it.
