Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Resist is the first full length album from Kosheen, the Bristol massive who have been around for over two years with a string of dancefloor classics, including "Slip & Slide (Suicide)" and "Hide U". The singles are featured, along with other sublime electronic breakbeat tracks and drum 'n' bass torch songs, on their debut album. Darren Decoder and Markee Substance are the production merchants, while singer/songwriter Sian Evans has raided her mother's Carly Simon and Joni Mitchell collection to come up with songs that combine traditional tunes with state-of-the art beats. In a warm, grainy voice she sings about urban relationships--being cool, being wanted, being watched, being saved. Kosheen are the drum 'n' bass act most likely to achieve that elusive crossover status. Compulsive. --Lucy O'Brien

This debut album from Kosheen is, to be frank, quite wonderful. Drum'n'Bass is what they are considered to be, but just about every track on this album has pop running through it. Hardcore D'n'B fans will probably not find this particularly satisfying, unless they love pop music as well, but many people will. As this album has the remix of "Hide U" that was released as a single, do not expect many of the other songs to be in the same vein. That was a House tune, more or less, and that's not what this album is about. The original version is more representitive of what it's really like.
Certainly, going by the "Hide U" remix, I would never have bought this album. It was a good song, but not enough to convince me. Then, however, came along the absolutely brilliant "Catch" and "Hungry". These are fabulous pop songs with great melodies; definite album highlights, but there's more where that came from. If you loved those two, you really shouldn't be disappointed as many of the tracks are catchy and make you want to dance, with great vocals from Sian. "Face In A Crowd" (which really deserves to be a single) and "Cover" are particularly excellent.
The single "Harder", released soon, gives an indication of the other side of this album. It's a much more chilled, relaxed affair, but no worse for it. The song is simply gorgeous, and there are plenty of others like that, almost haunting in a way. "I Want It All" and the title track, "Resist" are fine examples. Admittedly, a couple tend to drag on a bit and can get repetitive, but this isn't a major or frequent occurence here.
Basically, if you have liked all singles released from "Resist" so far, you can't go wrong. With 15 tracks (16 if you include the intro) it's a truly enjoyable listen.

A lot of albums I've bought aren't as totally satisfying as I would have liked. This gets pretty close. Production wise, this is flawless - the use of unconventional sounds mean that this will keep your ears entertained for a long while to come. If you're like me and get bored by hearing the same bass, synth and string sounds through an album, you'll be pleasantly surprised here. The vocals are really nice, sitting somewhere between PJ Harvey, Sia Furler of Zero 7, Dido, and Zoe Johnston (If that's at all possible!) It's the actual songs though which really make this a good listen - a combination of drum and bass and breakbeat. which retain a good song structure throughout. Outstanding tracks for me are probably Hide U, Slip & Slide, Face in a Crowd (simply brilliant chorus), Pride and Hungry - but to be honest there's not a duff track to be found. If there was one criticism it would be the length of some of the tracks. I just wanted some of the tracks to start and end with less haste. Because of this it's probably fair to sum this up as 'intelligent underground pop music for the discerning listener' - sounds good eh?!? If you like Lamb, Zero 7, Bent, Peshay, PJ Harvey, Faithless, Goldfrapp etc then I see no reaon why you won't enjoy this. So buy it!

You know Roni Size, right? You were blown away by tracks like Heroes and Dirty Beats? Then come stand in my shoes, because that's where I am. Since the amazing breakthrough of drum n bass in the Mercury Music Prize in 1998, everyone geared up for a drum n bass revolution...well here it is. Four years late.

Kosheen have come along and within six months, redefined the art of drum and bass music. To the point where even I fail to see how it can be classed as drum and bass. What we have is a refreshing blend of vocals from Sian Evans, mixed up in the biggest beat blender you could ever fit on the back of a truck. Darren Decoder has come up trumps with some wonderfully sublime melodies, which at the same time get you twitching in that horrible 'I can't dance but I wish I could' kind of way. From the opening track (I'm discounting the intro) HideU, right through to the remixed version at the end, I was up and at it - burning calories by the bucketload. This is pure energy music.

The energy comes through in the strength of the beat, overlaid with smooth strings, mellow chords, and vocals. Vocals that sometimes trip you up with their sweet innocence, before changing into thrashy snarling malevolence (just check out Pride, track 12). And undeniably, as great as the music is, it's the lyrics that redefine drum and bass, and make it accessible to everyone. It's a simple idea, pioneered by Breakbeat Era (a Roni Size engine yet again), but Kosheen have added depth, and flow to a genre once hailed for its speed, heaviness and unpredictability.

If you don't own it, I suggest you give it a whirl. As drum and bass goes, you can't get much better than this.
