5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, quite brilliant!! 15 Jan 2001

This book has helped me considerably during my dissertation, it is quite simply the best book on the market at the momen,t when dealing with anything to do with surveying or business management. I would recommend this book to anybody from surveyers wanting to further their knowledge in this area, to the undergaduate working towards their degrees or virtually anyone who wants a good book to read a bedtime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for diagnosing defects in homes 1 Jun 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I have read this book on a number of occassions and regularly use it as a point of reference in my work as a building surveyor. This book will take you step by step through the entire residential survey process; from the preparation needed before carrying out surveys, on to carrying out different types of surveys and how to write them, then moving on to what the future may hold for the profession itself. Each chapter is written in a very concise and coherent fashion, and a lot of care has been taken into not misleading the reader in any way, by focussing on the facts and theories behind each part of the residential appraisal process. I would recommend this book to every student taking a building surveying or a property related course as well as people working in the profession at present. Even lay people would be prudent in purchasing a copy of this book to become a little more familiar with their own surroundings, albeit in a more cynical way!
Incidently, this book was written back in 2001 when I graduated and since then a lot has changed in the residential survey market especially in terms of the 'Sellers Pack' and the Home Condition Survey attached to one. However, this brilliant team of authors (Parnham & Rispin) have been able to respond to this change very well by bringing out another book called the 'Home Inspectors Handbook' which is targeted at those who wish to become inspectors to carry out such surveys.
Chris Rispin is currently working as a Technical Director for Allied Surveyors hence is very knowledgable indeed in terms of the home buying process and the types of surveys associated to home buying.

I used this book whilst training for my TechRICS in RSV several years ago. I also had a lecture provided by Phil Parnham whilst training with my firm at the time (Countrywide Surveyors). Overall it is a very good reference book, easy to read with plenty of information. However, there is one glaring fault which I was surprised to find - dry rot (Serpula lacrymans) as every good surveyor knows is a funghi, however in the book it is described as a "delicate plant!" As such, this book is great for structural problems, but poor on decay.

Superb book for any student of residential building defects. Some great practical tips, presented in a very accessible way. Ties together much of the theory from other standard texts.
