This movie, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, who also directed the sci-fi horror cult movie Event Horizon, deals with the survival of a small group of security personnel employed by the pharmaceutical hypercompany Umbrella, well known to the fans of the Resident Evil video games.
An outbreak of the mutating T-Virus in a research facility is threatening to spread to Raccoon City, a small fictional city in the northern States, and the protagonist Alice (Milla Jovovich), who recently suffered from amnesia due to a plot-related issue that I'm not going to reveal here, has to investigate along with her team, and as they dig deeper into the underground facility, the truth reveals itself to be far worse than expected.
This movie is not a Citizen Kane kind of film. I don't think anyone considering buying this doesn't know that. But it's been around since 2002 and every horror fan knows this movie, most love it simply because it's amazingly filmed, with dark corners and angled cameras, lots of images that one does not forget, and a kick-ass soundtrack. Even though the movies differ strongly from the games, especially the later ones, there are lots of parallels, and the actors do their part very well. The storyline is fun, not to hard on the brain, and Resident Evil is a great start of a series that has become more and more successful with every film they make. To this date, the Resident Evil movies keep their place in the Guinness Book of World Records Games Edition as the only series of video game adaptions that is continuosly successful, meaning that every additional movie grossed more than its predecessor.
If you like survival-horror with guns and gadgets, a cool soundtrack, a great protagonist and awesome settings, you should see this. Especially on Blu-ray.
