An absolute bargain at the previous offer price of £16. The corks and capsules alone would cost £4. However, the pack I received did not contain the oak chips mentioned in the other reviews. The instructions say the sg should be in the range of 1075-1090. In fact it was 1075, not even enough to make 10% alcohol, let alone the 12% quoted in the other review. These factors may account for the very low offer price. In order to bring it up to strength, I should have made it up to 18 litres, not 23, as instructed, but it was too late for that so I added a kilo of sugar instead, not an ideal solution as it already contains an unspecified amount of sugar.
As with all such kits, you don't actually get 30 bottles unless you top up the finished wine with water. Had I known the gravity was below par and used less water instead of adding sugar, 20 bottles would be nearer the mark. Still a great bargain, but not at the new price of £37. Better to go for the California Connosseur version for a little more. That comes out at 12% abv and includes oak chips. You don't get corks or capsules, but I use screw caps anyway. Or the merlot, which looks good at £20 currently, but check the gravity at 18 litres and only add more water if the reading is significantly above 1090.
