Book Description

Research is rooted in philosophical beliefs about values, concepts, and the nature of knowledge. In order to appreciate these philosophical beliefs, several key concepts and terms require consideration and understanding. Complicating the novice researcher’s understanding of these ideas is the unfortunate reality that existing definitions can be confusing. This situation can leave students feeling overwhelmed and confused.
The purpose of this book is to provide an overview of major inquiry or research paradigms in a simplified way. The terms discussed in this book include, but are not limited to:

• Paradigm
• Axiology
• Ontology
• Epistemology
• Methodology
• Paradigm shift
• Positivism
• Modernism
• Post-modernism
• Post-positivism
• Critical Theory
• Constructivism

Keep in mind that the terms covered in this book are often debated, understood, and communicated in multiple “correct” ways. Also, due to the evolving nature of knowledge and diverse perspectives within the literature, this book serves as an introduction to research terminology that will help you understand, follow, and even participate in this debate. This book will be particularly useful to nursing students who are learning about nursing inquiry. Nursing is a field in which inquiry skills are integral to the development of best evidence and furthering of the profession as a whole.

The book itself is a revelation and is as exactly described, since the author makes an excellent effort in explaining what many would regard as an extremely complicated subject. Typically the terminology used can be slightly confusing and overwhelming for beginners, however, everything becomes a lot clearer as one starts to read further into this book, all thanks to the author's commendable job of explaining everything in a simple, no nonsense and easy to understand manner, with clear examples. Overall a great introductory guide for those in the nursing or research professions, and certainly helps one differentiate fact from fiction.

4.0 out of 5 stars a good read at a price. 21 Jan. 2015

Really easy and quick way to find your way around research paradigms. I was able to apply immediately to academic lectures and literature research without trying.
The only downside is the price, at just over £7 to download on my kindle and have it read in a couple of hours feels like day light robbery. I'm sure if I tried hard enough I could have downloaded something similar for free.

Wanted a refresher on basic nursing research terminology and this absolutely did the job, it is very basic but the use of examples and great definitions makes previously difficult terms easy to understand and I feel much more certain of my understanding of ontology, epistemology etc.

This basic book gives you a start if you're new to some of the terminology; it's a short book and has nothing that you couldn't find on the internet but having said that it explains something complicated in an understandable way.
