The Rescuers may have been produced at a crisis point for the Walt Disney Productions, with Don Bluth leading a mutiny with several key animators to start his own studio not long after, but it holds up as one of the studio's best animated features. It's a neat situation with likeable and thoughtfully animated characters that benefits from good, economic storytelling with a real understanding of pacing (something latter Disney features frequently lose sight of), with the comic set pieces, such as Orville's Albatross Airlines or gators Brutus and Nero trying to catch the mice hiding in a pipe organ, complimenting rather than stopping the story. And it's a lot of fun, too, all of which makes the sequel, The Rescuers Down Under, all the more disappointing. While it's not exactly bad, it's flat and unengaging, taking too long to set up the plot, constantly sidelining the nominal leads and going off on irrelevant and overlong diversions (like the hospital scenes) that simply pad out the running time on an already thin yarn. A near disaster at the box-office on its original release, the passage of time hasn't done much to improve it.

While the UK Blu-ray release only offers the first film, Disney's region-free US Blu-ray offers both films, though aside from deleted song Peoplitis on the first film, there's no upgrade in extra features from the earlier DVD releases - short film The Water Birds, cartoon Three Blind Mouseketeers and singalong song (Someone's Waiting for You) on The Rescuers and just a solitary making of featurette on the sequel. The picture quality on the two films is very good but not outstanding, perhaps because both films are included on a single disc, though they're more than acceptable if you're not expecting the level of loving frame-by-frame restoration of many of the studio's vintage classics.
