The substantial notes at the beginning of the book give a good historical foundation, which should be read first as it makes the story much easier to understand subsequently. As well as presenting, what is ultimately a classic novel in Spanish literature well, it also offers many guidelines for non-native speakers. It includes endnotes, a vocabulary section, as well as many footnotes. All in all, I would recommend this to anyone studying the novel as part of a degree or A-level course. It has been a godsend for me.

This book was really good in helping me extend my vocabulary and understanding of spanish grammar. Although the storyline is a little tedious, and seemingly lengthly at times, it offers a good insight into how an individual small settlement was affected by the Spanish civil war.

Having read this at University in my first year back in 1991, I can still remember practically word for word the story and the imagery of this beautiful short novel. Please buy it in any format (translated into English, with footnotes, vocab section etc etc) if you are interested in Spanish culture, tradition, politics, or just for a good short read.
