THE CRUSADES ARE OVER AND EUROPE IS IN CHAOS.

After years fighting in the desert sun - and secretly working for peace with the Brethren - Will Campbell returns to find his Scottish homeland under attack by his enemy, King Edward I.

Betrayed by those he has served since boyhood, torn apart watching his daughter plunge into a dangerous affair, Will must now forge his own path to peace - even if it leads through another battlefield.

But a new threat is rising in France, where a warrior king will stop at nothing to achieve his twisted ambitions.

The fight for the Holy Land is over. But the Temple's last battle has just begun.

Review

Young writes with remarkable accuracy, action-packed efficiency and gut-wrenching violence (The Times)

Satisfyingly complex (Sunday Telegraph)

Compared to Bernard Cornwell's Azincourt, REQUIEM is 'More rollicking, even more fast moving and breathless...so pacy' (Heat's Boyd Hilton, speaking on Radio 5 Live Books Panel)

Fantastic baddies! (Independent on Sunday's Suzi Feay, speaking on Radio 5 Live Books Panel)

An outstanding contemporary writer (Kate Mosse)

El Cid meets The Da Vinci Code! Exciting, page-turning fiction (Simon Mayo's book panel, BBC Radio Five Live on BRETHREN)

A sweeping historical adventure as well as a cracking sequel (Financial Times on CRUSADE)

If you love the Templars, the Crusades, and the Middle Ages, this is the book for you. Robyn Young is an exciting new voice (Sharon Penman on BRETHREN)

One of the best historical debuts in recent memory. Exciting and enthralling, it gripped me from the first page and left me waiting anxiously for the next instalment (John Connolly on BRETHREN)

Swords clash in the first sentence of Young's latest and go on clashing throughout...plenty of action...attention to historical detail...pacy dialogue (The Times on CRUSADE)

Wonderful... loaded with atmosphere, action, and intrigue. The Crusades come alive (Steve Berry on BRETHREN)

Tipped to be the next Da Vinci Code (Elle on BRETHREN)

A sweeping historical adventure with strong characters and serious verve...Can't wait for the next two volumes! (Sarah Weinman on BRETHREN)

Richly worked and captivating...an epic story of war, intrigue and heroism (Good Book Guide on BRETHREN)

About the Author

Robyn Young was born in Oxford and grew up in the Midlands and Devon. She has a Masters in Creative Writing from the University of Sussex and lives and writes in Brighton full-time. Her first novel, BRETHREN, was the bestselling hardback debut novel of 2006, with the paperback also going straight into the top ten bestseller list. Two more bestsellers followed, CRUSADE and REQUIEM, completing the Brethren trilogy, which has now sold over a million copies and been translated into nineteen languages.

The inspiration for Robyn's new trilogy, which began with INSURRECTION and continues in RENEGADE, grew out of an earlier research trip to Scotland. Robyn explains: 'Day by day, out of the pages of history and the wild landscape, one figure came striding, larger, clearer than all the others - Robert the Bruce. He swept me off my feet and carried me into a story of bitter family feuds, two civil wars and the struggle for the crown. I realised there was no way this character could play a cameo role in another man's story. His tale was too powerful, too intricate and too good to be cut down and boxed to fit.'

5.0 out of 5 stars Will Campbell for James Bond! 24 Nov 2008
Format:Hardcover
I was bursting waiting for this to be released having read the first two books and absolutely loved them. This was a period in history which was not covered in depth at school, and it was totally fascinating to discover more about what actually went on, when it is often purely portrayed as romantic and heroic, and ignores the brutality and sacrifice which was always present. In Will Campbell, Ms Young has created a character that you love but sometimes want to slap to break him out of his stubborn streak, but this partly makes the reader not want to put the book down and can't wait to see what happens next. He has more adventures and near death scrapes than all the James Bond put together, but you go with the flow being so wrapped up in his story. Agree with previous reviewer re the description of his involvement with Wallace and what he went through to try and achieve his aim. I loved this and will no doubt start re reading all three again very shortly, and look forward to the next book from Ms Young, whichever period it will be set in, I am sure it will be a 'must' read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gruelling, Gritty, Great 9 Nov 2008
By edzshed
Format:Hardcover
There are a couple of things you need to know about this book/series if you have not come across this author before, firstly when I started this trilogy a few years ago it was sold as 'for fans of Bernard Cornwell', this in itself is somewhat mis-leading, the two authors have totally and utterly different writing styles, the only thing they have in common is that they are both historical novelists. However don't let this put you off, each of the books covers a far greater space of time than Cornwell usually covers but Robyn Young deals with this effortlessly she wraps her tale around historic events effortlessly but in such a way that enthralls the reader.

The next point worth noting is that this is a massive read, but well worth it, I expected to take about 3 weeks to get through this, infact I finished it in a week, the story just compells you to carry on.

If you are considering this as a stand alone novel then I still feel you will enjoy it, but emplore you to read the whole trilogy.

Out of Brethren, Crusade and Requiem I have to say that Requiem is by far my favourite, I loved the portrayal of Sir William Wallace, far better than the character portrayed in Braveheart. We also read about Kings, Popes and a variety of other true characters each of which the author brings to life with what appears the greatest of ease.

If you like historical fiction and haven't tried Robyn Young then you really should give her a go.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!! 10 Nov 2008
Format:Hardcover
What Robyn Young has always excelled at was to take a list of real historical events and then connect them in a beautifully flowing work of fiction and she has done it once again. The complex relationship between kings, popes and knights of the time was brought to life and Will Campbell's story of intrigue and betrayal was fantastically told.

While "Crusade" was my personal favourite, "Requiem" brought about a fitting and wonderful end to Will's private life, struggle for peace and his largely futile efforts on behalf of the Anime Templi.

How sad that the trilogy has come to an end. I have always loved historical fiction and this trilogy has proven why readers should start getting into it. Not only have these books thrilled me, they have also educated me about the Templars and the Crusades. More than once, I have reached out to Wikipedia to help me better appreciate the context surrounding the events in the book. I would like to think now that I can tell my friends some things about the Templars and do so with some authority :-)

I hope Ms Young continues writing her excellent books. I shall look forward to them.
