I tried REALLY hard not to race through this book, but it was impossible!! Another rollicking adventure from the talented Ms Buroker. Quite possibly my favourite so far (though I suspect this is because I have grown to know and love the characters from the previous equally excellent books)! The changing POV allows the reader to gain greater insight into the motivations and insecurities of both the known and the interesting new characters. As always, the book has an imaginative plot, is full of humour and, at one point, I even shed a tear!! Ms Buroker has, once again, left me wanting to know how plotlines develop for the various characters (look to 'Swords and Salt' for the development of one storyline)...I am already waiting for the next one!!!!!

Lindsay Buroker could write backwards in Turgonian and still have a best seller on her hands..

This is an epic in the gentlest steampunkest tradition. A cleverly crafted story that gave good airtime to multiple characters and never left me feeling that they were fillers or the situations overly engineered plot devices. I think a lot of authors find it challenging to develop more than a couple of the characters in their book or to imbue them with and strength of character, but this book has a well developed lead cast of seven (Rias, Tikaya, Amaranthe, Sicarius, Sespian, Mahliki and Maldynado) plus the new character of Dak and appearances by several other regulars as well as the prescriptive Big Bads.

Writing is crisp and full of Burokers signature humour. If you've not read her before, go back and get the series before reading this. It's not essential but it will make everything more familiar and add to the enjoyment.

If you have read any of the previous Emperors Edge books then you will know exactly what I'm talking about when I say that this book will not disappoint for plenty of action, comedy moments, the affable camaraderie between the characters and the conclusion had me biting my nails in the kind of 'how will they get out of this!!??' fashion that Lindsay Burokers is so very good at giving her readers. (if you haven't read the other installments in the series, go and start with book 1 - The Emporers Edge. It's free on the kindle so what have you got to lose? warning: I take no responsibility for possible resulting Buroker addiction and consequent hours spent devouring the rest of the series)

It always worries me when an author pushes out book after book of a series - the potential to overdevelop a concept is always there. But to be perfectly frank, Lyndsay has such a seemingly effortless relationship with her characters and the worlds that they inhabit that it's no surprise that this installment is a perfect follow-up to the previous books. Without posting any spoilers - I found the characters to be just as engaging as before, yet subtly altered by previous experiences.....as of course, they should be. The story was well paced The plot was completely apt yet with unexpected aspects and there was plenty of my favourite assassin to drool over....*ahem*....I mean 'appreciate' ;)

I look forward to the next installment! In the mean time, I believe there may be a Dragon Blood book calling my name.............

I was given this book by the author for an honest review.

My problem is that I'm obsessed with the world this story is set in, and the reasons for that are simple:
1. It's such an amazingly realistic, believable world,
2. the characters as so familiar and real to me that I enjoy being in their company so much.

Perhaps I can describe this book in one word: brilliant

My daughter and I were reading in a coffee shop and I kept embarrassing her by laughing out loud just about every time Maldynado stepped on the page. He is even funnier in this book than he is in the other EE books - and that's saying something.

In this book, set soon after the establishment of the Republic, the team, with the addition of Tikaya (whom I love) and Mahliki) are challenged by a variety of evils including a sentient plant! And what a plant that is. I loved every description of it and could visualise it perfectly in my mind's eye - it was almost a seventh hero in the plot (or rather villain) and I almost thought it needed a POV of its own!

As usual the rest of the characters are just wonderful and I loved getting up to speed with Sespian in his new life as a penniless student. But my favourite characters still remain Amaranthe and Sicarious. I could read anything with those two in it. Note to Lindsay: A series about their exploits in their new jobs would be very gratefully received . . . .

As one expects from Lindsay Buroker, the action in Republic is fast-paced, nail-biting stuff even with six POVs. It never lets up for a minute and there are constant twists and explosions (only a few of them could be blamed on Maldynado) to satisfy even my craving for action.

I enjoyed meeting again such well written and loveable characters that I had come to know through the Emperor's Edge series of books. Perhaps not as intriguing or in depth a storyline as her previous books but I don't mind because I was able to spend quality time in a world I would like to have the opportunity to visit again.
