Product Description

Product Description

Some of the most vibrant and varied crime writing around anywhere is centred on the evocative industrial fishing port of Hull, with its shadowy wind-swept streets, its hard-bitten attitudes, its drugs, its gangsters and yet its underlying humanity that clings like untended weeds amid the cracks of the endemic poverty and the violence.

And Alfie Robins' 'Reprisal' is an outstanding example of the genre, a classic police procedural where you can hear the streets, smell the weather, savour the taciturn banter, and feel the four inch nail being driven into the heads of victims by a vengeful, meticulous and psychotic serial killer.

This is a criminal environment as real as it gets, and this is how people die if DCI Philip Marlowe and his over-stretched, tight-knit team don't get there first.

Yep, exactly 24 Nov 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
There are some books that you pick up and think, 'absolutely spot on', and this is one of them.

I happen to know the city Alfie Robins is describing here, and he captures the downbeat nature of the place perfectly. I am no expert on police procedure, but he seems to have a good grasp of that too, and it certainly all makes sense and is even informative.

I actually guessed the identity of the murderer about 30 seconds before it was revealed, which is superb timing. Clearly it was possible to guess who was doing the dastardly deeds because I did, but it was not so obvious that I was drumming my fingers shouting 'I bet it is, it's got to be .....' in frustration.

This must be the first of a series - it has that feel to it too.

OK, DCI Marlowe is the classic maverick with the dishevelled homelife, the guy people respect and sometimes fear, except for his bosses who kick his arse, respect and fear him, ignoring his integrity and wasted heart of gold. But the rest of the team is very fully developed too so that this becomes as much an ensemble piece as a one-man show, and it would still work without the charismatic central character - that is a lot rarer.

Put me down for the next one.

I've never read a novel set in Hull. I have visited the place on a few occasions and it has always struck me as rather bleak and rundown; a place struggling against adversity. A place where life is harsh and hard living is natural. Mr Robins is spot on in capturing the essence of the place. His prose is often taut and sparing, just right to reflect the grittiness of day to day life.

The central police character is a flawed individual; he's part of the system but he's an outsider. But he's totally believable and just right for the location. The supporting characters are equally well drawn and I found the dialogue realistic. As a police procedural, it gets the right balance of process and supporting action. The bad guys are deeply unpleasant! The whole book flowed really well, the plot's strong and there's change of pace, build of tension and enough twists to keep the reader guessing. A really great crime thriller and I hope the start of a series.

This book is set in Hull a place that I have been to many times, and it captures the atmosphere of the City. A killer is at large who it is up to DCI Marlowe to capture. Overall a great and gripping read.

Great Book
Great book set in Hull, following the exploits of DCI Marlowe trying to catch a brutal killer. Down to earth and full of atmosphere, I recommend this one.
