History : my god, it CAN be interesting, 9 Jun 2000
By Graham Mossman - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Reportage Scotland: History in the Making (Paperback)
This book takes a different approach to others I have read on the same topic : it lets people who were there tell the story - whether it's about Elvis on his one and only stop-over in Scotland, or the testimony of tortured witches telling of their dealings with satan in 16th century courthouses.
All of the raw materials come from what must be a frighteningly diverse manuscript collection at Scotland's National Library.
The flow of information is well guided by paragraphs written by the author, without being intrusive or assuming you know the first thing about the subject ( a fair guess in my case !)
The main joy of this book is the exquisite choice of the accounts to represent the events of the last two thousand years in Scotland - you get a real sense of the Scottish personality as well as learning the dry, theoretical history-as-we-know-it.
Scottish history is not something that is well known or understood even within Scotland - with the help of books like this and educators like Louise Yeoman, this is a state of affairs that will surely soon be changed.
