Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Capturing a dynamic ensemble on disc is a tricky business--the studio often engenders nitpicky cautiousness, while recording a live show compromises the sound, especially with acoustic music. On Replay, the genre-bending quartet led by banjo master Alison Brown finds a nice alternative approach, revisiting songs from her six previous albums in two days of informal live-in-the-studio performances. The result is a crisp-sounding and loose-limbed set that showcases both the range of Brown's compositions--from swing to Latin jazz to newgrass to chamber pop--and the fluency of the band (John R Burr on piano, Garry West on bass, and Kendrick Freeman on drums). Along with her fleet, filigreed banjo picking, Brown delivers some hot guitar tracks, playing slinky jazz solos on "Daytime TV" and "The Inspector" and bringing the CD to a sweetly lyrical close on "The Promise of Spring". --Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most original CDs I've heard in years, 30 Aug 2002

Alison Brown and her band recently appeared at Fairport Convention's Cropredy festival and boy did she win over some new friends!

Fairport have always had a reputation for getting some really good bands to play at Cropredy but even among such quality musicians Alison's band really stood out. My CD collection stretches towards the 450 mark but I can honestly say I haven't got anything else like this CD. It's a bluegrass jazz album full of joyous virtuoso playing that's sure to put you in a good mood - especially if you appreciate musical craftsmenship.

I've submitted a few reviews to Amazon over the months but have always shyed away from giving 5 stars because it's often easy for fans to overlook weaknesses in their favourite bands' music. But there's no question in my mind that Alison deserves all the plaudits that are laid at her door. I personally would travel a long way to see her live again.

Buy it. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an Album, 24 Jan 2002
By Keith - Published on Amazon.com

i'm fairly new to alison brown's music. i saw her for the first time at telluride last year when she played with the boom chicks. i bought her grammy winning album 'fair weather' and absolutely loved it. a great bluegrass album, by the way, if you're looking for one to add to your collection. a friend told me she had a new one coming out in early 2002 so i bought a copy a few weeks ago. you've got to get this if you don't already have it! just all around awesome acoustic music. it is less 'studio' oriented and more like a live performance in the sense that the band members take solos. you can just tell they are having fun! i think she even plays some killer guitar on a few tracks. alison's playing amazed me in person and it does the same on this disc. i highly suggest getting yourself a copy. help spread the word on her playing. she's really great!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your father's bluegrass, 24 Nov 2002
By ali - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Replay (Audio CD)
I originally bought this album after hearing a review on NPR. Overall, it's excellent. The album was recorded in only a couple of days, which lends the feeling that it's more like a live performance than a canned recording. Overall, the quartet is *very* tight, and they complement each other perfectly.

There is a good variety of pieces on this album, from more fast-tempo traditional bluegrass style to a couple of lullaby-like ballads. Definitely worth a listen!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful mix of Jazz and Bluegrass, 5 Mar 2002

I am new to Alison Brown's style of music.
But I simply love the light airy sound of
the banjo with the jazz. It is a treat for
the ears.
