I acknowledge that Apple's design is for the most part second to none. Most of their kit is beautiful, functional and intuitive. The exception in my opinion is their accessories and peripherals, particularly their power supplies, which are clunky, over-complex and worst of all prone to failure. Check out the reviews on Apple's own forums to read about flexes cracking and pulling loose when wound around the built-in cable tidy, or units simply giving up the ghost after thirteen months.
I've had personal experience of this so felt I had nothing to lose a few years ago by buying one these non-Apple power supplies. It just does what it says on the tin, with no pretensions to fancy design, and it does it well. The first unit was so good I have since bought two more. Yes, it's a shame the UK mains lead is black, but on the other hand, you can plug it into a socket on a train, which due to the restricted space the original clunky Apple unit couldn't always do.
Also I am annoyed that the price has been creeping up since I first bought one, but they are still half that of Apple originals, and in my opinion better quality. When I hear of Apple trying to ban the sale of mag-safe compatible power supplies that aren't made by them, I want to spit bullets at their grasping, dog-in-the-manger arrogance.
Get one of these. You won't regret it.
