The director of Chow Yun-fat's first Hollywood outing, music video veteran Antoine Fuqua, seems to be trying to squeeze the charismatic Asian superstar into a conventional American action hero mould, and the results are dispiriting.

Fuqua never lets this high-spirited actor smile, fetishising him as a gun-slinging clotheshorse in a series of garish, scenery smashing battle scenes. As a paid assassin whose former employers turn against him, Chow enlists the help of an illegal documents specialist played, with surprising grit, by Mira Sorvino, and then spends most of the time fending off squads of killers in mirror shades. The movie is art directed and photographed fit to kill (even the most routine incidents are eye-gougingly colourful) and edited to a hip-hop beat. It's garishly superficial. The frequent gunplay duels may keep action fans riveted, but they'll hate themselves in the morning. --David Chute

...and about a seven and a half for the Blu-Ray.

Really not that different from the Collectors Edition DVD, especially when upscaled through the PS3. That said, at this price, probably worth the investment if you like the film enough - which I do.

As for the film itself, Chow-Yun Fat and John Woo in their prime - and The Crystal Method's 'Keep Hope Alive' to open with. Nuff said...

I have seen this a number of times on the normal DVD format but have upgraded to the Blu Ray version. This is a top film with Chow-Yun Fat with plenty of shootouts with guns that never seem to need a new round but who cares great night viewing. On the blu ray side of things a little disappointed being honest it's not any better than the remastered edition so save your money and just upscale the picture sharpness and colour is really no different. So this will only get a 4 star due to the blu ray not being as good as it should be.
