New Zealand born, London-based, composer/producer Mark de Clive-Lowe
dishes out some good tunes and cracking beats on his new album 'Renegades'.
From the ribald Latin/jazz shuffle of 'Get Started', featuring Omar, Shiela E.
and a set of red-hot timbales, to the steamy finale 'Alabi', roping in the
sultry vocal talents of Sandra Nkake, we are struck by the sophisticated
and pliable nature of Mr de C-L's muse. The project is a cross-genre delight.
The arrangements are solid and well-plotted. A song like 'Under Orders' with
its manically skittering snare drum, rich vocal harmonies and limber central
performance courtesy of Tawia (sporting a dapper Sarf London accent) is a hoot!
Niah Andrews is clearly having fun too on the tight 'n' slinky 'Hooligan', with
its mercurial flute solo. It's a big plus to have such a talented bunch of musical
collaborators. The storming 'Push' brings Bembe Segue and Ms Andrews together
in a veritable funk-fest of chattering staccato synths and razor-sharp rhythm.
'Everything' delivers the epitome of late-night cool with a deliciously laid-
back vocal from Ovasoul 7 but it is 'Emergency', more than any other track,
which succeeded in getting my listening juices flowing like a Pavlovian mutt
(Ms Andrews again on top-form!) with beats which bounce like a beach ball!
A classy release to while away the small hours.
