Book Description

1 Jun 1997 Mill of the Flea
THE SECOND book in the best-selling Mill of the Flea series, continuing the often farcical and always entertaining adventures of the author and his wife as they attempt to make a new life in rural France. Totally unlike any other book in travel literature. FOLLOWING ON FROM HOME & DRY IN FRANCE, René & Me sees the author and his wife moving across the Channel to try and live off the land and their wits in an isolated corner of Normandy. They arrive at the ruined Mill of the Flea and embark on a series of hare-brained schemes as they struggle to come to terms with a very different culture. Then an unlikely ally arrives in the shape of wily countryman René Ribet, who offers to become their guide and mentor for what proves to be an unforgettable year…

Review

Writing with style, shed-loads of humour, and a wry slant on life, George East wears his heart on his sleeve. Thank goodness he's been able to share some of his life with us, and not just the good bits. --Central B.Journal

If you can laugh, and sometimes cry, you'll feel a great empathy for George's books. 'Rene and me' is my particular favourite, as the Fox of Cotentin has quietly been circling his lair in previous books, and now shows his true colours. --France Life

Like most people, I bought just one of George East's books to start with. Then couldn't wait to buy all the rest! So come on George, can't wait for the next one! --Southern Times Journal

From the Publisher

Synopsis
René & Me tells the story of the author and his wife's attempts to live off the land and their wits at an old mill in an isolated corner of Normandy. On arrival, the innocents abroad fall for the wiles of René Ribet, known locally as The Normandy Fox. Following a series of near- disasters and hare-brained schemes which include trying to bottle the polluted water of their stream and set up metal-detecting weekends to discover the location of the miller's buried hoard, the couple finally discover where the true treasure of La Puce is to be found..

René & Me is another triumph for the author, who has won an army of fans with his uniquely humourous, insightful and poignant style.

5.0 out of 5 stars George does it again! A wonderful follow-up. 8 May 2002
Format:Paperback
If you liked "Home and Dry" you should love this book. George and Donella are established in their tumbledown mill home and the fun goes on. Donella has her hordes of animal guests and George wrestles with life in Normandy and the wiles of his "estate manager", Rene the Fox. I shouldn't ask George to put hand on heart that every word is true, some of it may have been affected by his liquid intake, but it's a superbly funny book just the same, and George is a craftsman in the art of the telling phrase.

It's not all high jinks, though, and I cried buckets over the fortunes of some of George's unforgettable characters. May he go on and on with his tales of the Cotentin region!

5.0 out of 5 stars Real life France 17 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is a book about the real France that most of the holiday trippers miss.visit any smokey small town cafe in Normandy and it's anyone's guess where the local Renee Ribet might emerge from. The book catalogues the minor triumphs and major disasters that can befall the ex-pat Brit deftly picking his way through rural French life. The book swings through the entire emotional range mostly very very funny but also at times quiet and compassionate. It stands more than three reads- buy it

5.0 out of 5 stars Love life? You'll love this book... 14 Dec 2003
Format:Paperback
Writing with style, shed-loads of humour, and a wry slant on life, George East wears his heart on his sleeve. What you see (at least from the illustrations!) is what you get. A big man, with a big heart. Thank goodness he's been able to share some of his life with us, and not just the good bits.
If you're the sort of person who counts waking up each day as a bonus, and you feel the blood coursing through your veins, then this book is for you.
If you can laugh, and sometimes cry, you'll feel a great empathy for George's books. 'Rene and me' is my particular favourite, as the Fox of Cotentin has quietly been circling his lair in previous books, and now shows his true colours.
Like most people, I bought just one of George East's books to start with. Then couldn't wait to buy all the rest!
So come on George, can't wait for the next one!
My debit card awaits.
Thanks for reading this far!
