Some books are easily forgettable, some you remember for a while and then, there are a few books that will remain within one's memory for life. Rendezvous - South Atlantic is one of the latter, as Douglas Reeman's talent shines to the fore in this wonderful tale of Commander David Lindsay and his efforts to turn a motley crew of naval misfits and 'hostilities only' ratings into a crew to be proud of. Disappointed at first to be given command of the armed merchant cruiser, HMS Benbecula, Lindsay soon grows to feel a great affinity for the aged and listing ship and his crew, driven by his force of will and undoubted skills, blossoms into a team to be proud of, This story of the Benbecula's war had me gripped from the first few pages and for the first time in my life, when reading a book, as I read the final few pages, I felt my emotions welling up and a real tear fell from my eye as the final, brutal conclusion unfolded before my eyes.
Bravo Mr. Reeman!
