Product Description

In 1941, when she was turned into an armed merchant cruiser, the S. S. Benbecula was already old. Yet even she was needed to protect the vital Atlantic sea lanes. Commander Lindsay, her new captain, had to work desperately to mould the ship's company - raw recruits and old timers - into a fighting force. And better than anyone, Lindsay knew this could be his last command, his last chance- --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Some books are easily forgettable, some you remember for a while and then, there are a few books that will remain within one's memory for life. Rendezvous - South Atlantic is one of the latter, as Douglas Reeman's talent shines to the fore in this wonderful tale of Commander David Lindsay and his efforts to turn a motley crew of naval misfits and 'hostilities only' ratings into a crew to be proud of. Disappointed at first to be given command of the armed merchant cruiser, HMS Benbecula, Lindsay soon grows to feel a great affinity for the aged and listing ship and his crew, driven by his force of will and undoubted skills, blossoms into a team to be proud of, This story of the Benbecula's war had me gripped from the first few pages and for the first time in my life, when reading a book, as I read the final few pages, I felt my emotions welling up and a real tear fell from my eye as the final, brutal conclusion unfolded before my eyes.

Bravo Mr. Reeman!

MORE THAN READABLE 10 Sep 2010

If you have not read anything from Douglas Reeman before and If you enjoy a good naval war story you'll enjoy this. Set aboard an old merchant man converted to an auxiliary cruiser, I thought this story had a little more depth to it than normal, not least of all because of the `clash' between the first office and captain which is quite believable. The ending is, well read the book, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. :-)

War amid ice and storm 28 Feb 2002
By Andrew S. Rogers - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The title says 'south Atlantic,' but for much of the early part of the story, the battered merchant cruiser 'Benbecula' is tossing about in the icy *north* Atlantic, battling not just Nazi U-boats and commerce raiders, but the unforgiving elements as well. In another one of his classic war-at-sea stories, Douglas Reeman builds toward a climactic (as opposed to climatic) confrontation that really draws the reader in.

Reeman's characters in 'Rendezvous - South Atlantic,' as is frequently the case in his writings, are sometimes hard to distinguish from men and women you've met in his earlier novels. But as is also common in his work, the star of this book is really the ship herself. 'Benbecula' stands apart from much of Reeman's other creations, and the battle in which she finds herself will be one you won't forget. I've read nearly a dozen Reeman titles and enjoyed nearly all of them. But this is one of two or three that really stands out for me.
