This is a sort of prequel to 7 Days, prior to meeting with the girl in that song. While that song had an easy, confident, fresh, kind of air to it, Rendezvous, by comparison, sounds rather forced, stale and lifeless. No More is better, with its rap from Guru and funky stop-start mechanisms, adds much-needed roughage to Rendezvous' porcelain soul.
The live Walking Away can't quite measure up to the original. It sounds weak without the studio version's phat backbeats, but it does give David a chance to show off his lovely, soulful voice, letting it swoop and dive without unnecessary strings or guitars to hammer the emotion home.
Blacksmith and Sunship provide excellent mixes of Rendezvous, introducing the song to a gritty funk background and removing its oversmooth edges. Perhaps if they'd let either of these mixes be the main track, this single wouldn't teeter so desperately over the edge of the gully marked bland. Craig David desperately needs to try something new if he doesn't want a case of diminishing returns.
