Product Description

Review

Most medical students consider the Oxford Handbook of Medicine to be their 'bible' and this book is destined for a similar status amongst both trainees and consultants in renal medicine or transplantation surgery. It is written in a style which is ideal for exam preparation as well as being a handy reference to dip in and out of. (Immunology News)

...the book is very informative, thorough and ideal for understanding the principles...a pocket bible for a renal transplant trainee (Urology News)

Like all of the books in this series it is an outstanding source of rapid reference. (BMA Medical Book Competition)

an excellent book and a very welcome addition to the renal transplantation literature...recommended to anyone joining a renal transplant unit for the first time; it will be invaluable to you. The book is also relevant to those who are studying for the MRCS and for the final exit examination in General Surgery, with or without an interest in transplantation. (Surgeon's News)

Another addition to the lineage of the Oxford series, this one is highly relevant to anyone remotely related to renal transplants. The handbook provides very useful, in depth understanding of the process of kidney transplantation. Twenty chapters are fitted into 464 pages, designed in a fashion similar to other Oxford handbooks. Being habituated to reading the Oxford handbooks, I find this outline easy to comprehend. The first few chapters on introduction and assessment of patients can make even a medical student feel comfortable to delve into this complex world. Organ donation (deceased and live) has been described, including brain stem death, medico-legal aspects, investigations and management of live donors. The immunological sections include basics of immunology and tissue typing, constructed in a manner which is simple and easy to construe. The practical details of immunosuppression are reported along with new advances. Tables and diagrams alongside the text (in Oxford handbook style) lets one absorb the intricacies of the subject most effectively. The bits in the book I particularly found appealing were surgical and technical components. The illustrations of surgical techniques are again quite remarkable. Descriptions of the procedures include general principles and details of graft placement and vascular and ureteric anastomosis. These are preceded by preoperative assessment and management and followed by a chapter on management of complications. Urological complications in particular have been summarised in two pages. Graft dysfunction, post-transplant infections, malignancy and medical management constitute the chapters that follow. At the end is a chapter on simultaneous transplants to complete the comprehensiveness!Read more ›

As a renal registrar this book is really helpful and is the only true 'handbook' of renal transplantation which is portable and concise with a bullet point style. It complements the oxford handbook of nephrology which has a rather brief section on transplantation. It was also useful for rapidly revising transplant medicine for the MRCP renal speciality exam. Afterwards I dug a little deeper and discovered some sections were prettty much word for word from the British Transplant Society guidelines - this is useful as the authors have essentially distilled important information from the major guidelines relevent to the UK. Overall highly recommended.
