3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Sid Nuncius HALL OF FAMETOP 10 REVIEWER on 17 Feb. 2013
Format: Audio CD
This is a collection of 47 extracts from some of The Tallis Scholars' finest recordings over the last 40 years. Each one is less than six minutes long and they cover the full period from their debut in 1973 to the excellent Mouton disc from 2012, and the collection forms a sort of Tallis Scholars' Greatest Hits.

There are some absolute gems here - Taverner's Leroy Kyrie, Tallis's Miserere nostri and the exquisite third Agnus Dei from Josquin's Missa L'homme Armé sexti toni, to take just a few examples - many of which completely transfixed me when I first heard them and still do. The quality of the music, the singing and the recording is uniformly excellent and shows once again why The Tallis Scholars have been regarded as one of the world's very finest ensembles for forty years. It is a remarkable achievement, justly celebrated here.

Whether the collection as a whole appeals will depend upon what you want from it. It is unashamedly aimed at getting more Renaissance music played on the radio by including only short pieces and excerpts from longer ones. I think this is a very good idea, but I was expecting to find the cumulative effect a bit unsatisfactory because I like to listen to, say, a whole mass setting in its entirety and was dubious about taking snippets from longer movements or pieces. In fact, I enjoy playing a few tracks together for the variety and I like having some highlights handy, too. I do find playing the discs as a complete programme a bit unsatisfactory, but that's not what it was designed for, and it is full of fabulous music which makes an excellent taster in smallish doses.

I very much hope that this set achieves its aim of getting Renaissance music more widely played. It would be an excellent place to start with this repertoire and it also offers a lot of pleasure to seasoned listeners like me. Recommended.
