Product Description

Review

"His discussion is marked by its scholarly breadth, clarity of argument, and willingness to include objects not within the canonic corpus....Welch's deeply informed and wide-ranging synthesis is a significant and welcome addition to the literature."--Library Journal

"This is a splendid book: well-conceived, lucidly presented, beautifully illustrated. The practical information on the production of works of art (the techniques of fresco painting and casting bronze) and on the social organization of artistic production is most welcome."--Daniel Bornstein, Texas A&M University

"An up-to-date, lucid and entirely readable synthesis of a wide range of current scholarship...should be required reading."--Nicholas Mann, Warburg Institute

"Learned and helpful...I do not know any other book which covers these topics so satisfactorily."--George Holmes, All Souls, Oxford

"A fresh and richly documented perspective on the role of images in the early Renaissance."--Martin Ke

Interesting Overview 27 Feb 2010
By Bingibongi VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is not a book specifically about painting but about art in general, be it painting, architecture, metal working, tapestry, sculpting etc. & aims to put art in its social context. It covers not only the actual methods of producing art but also who it was made for, how it was viewed and other such areas.

It is an easy read without being too technical or academic.

Because it covers a wide area it doesn't go into too much detail but rather provides a concise overview.

There are plenty of colour illustrations although these are sometimes rather small due to the actual size of the book.

Good value and an interesting read.

This book is a well researched and a thorough introduction to the art of renaissance Italy. It contains lots of full-page colour illustrations and has a nifty timeline at the back of the book. The author talks about how the art was created and its purpose.
I was expecting a headache after the second chapter but I was surprised to find it lucid and not migraine inducing at all.
It would provide anyone with a reliable introduction to this subject.

Good book for the scholar and the general reader, perhaps a bit prone to go off the track at times but these detours are quite enjoyable. The only complaint, and it is one common to all the Oxford History of Art series, is that the information on the size and location of the works illustrated is contained in end notes rather than being incorporated in the captions necessitating flicking bachwards and forwards while reading a chapter.
