Product Description

Review
"[A] lovely book ... [with] images you take away in your mind long after the book is back on the shelf."
--Richard Edmonds, Birmingham Post, 13th February 2009

Synopsis
This title is published to accompany the major exhibition Renaissance Faces: Van Eyck to Titian at the National Gallery, London (15 October 2008 - 18 January 2009).This brand new scholarship focuses on the relation between Northern and Southern European painting. This comprehensive survey traces the development of portrait painting in Northern and Southern Europe during the Renaissance, when the genre first flourished. Both regions developed their own distinct styles and techniques but each was influenced by the other. Focusing on the relationship between artists of the north and south, renowned specialists analyse the notion of likeness - at that time based not only on accurate reference to posterity, but incorporating all aspects of human life, including propaganda, power, courtship, love, family, ambition and hierarchy. It features essays and individual catalogue entries that present new research on works by some of the greatest portraitists of the period, including Giovanni Bellini, Sandro Botticelli, Lucas Cranach, Albrecht Durer, Jan van Eyck, Hans Holbein and Titian, all magnificently illustrated. This beautiful book is rich in information about portrait types, styles, techniques and iconographies, the function of portraits, and the connections between painting, sculpture and portrait medals.

The authors provide a fascinating account of the relationships of patrons, artists and sitters, as well as the process of making portraits, while also exploring complex notions of beauty, spiritual belief, and the portrait as a mirror of the soul.

(REAL NAME)
The catalogue for the current exhibition at the National Gallery in London, this book is a wondeful study of the art of portraiture in the Renaissance. Studying famous works by Van Eyck (the Arnolfini Betrothal), Holbein (the Ambassadors) or Raphael that belong to the museum, alongside lesser known works by the likes of Metsys (a wonderful pair of portraits from 1513, one -long a part of the National Gallery's collection- of an old woman, and its companion piece, an old man -probably her husband- which is in a private collection), Pontormo or Beccafumi, the book succeds in placing the portraits in their historical context, explaining their role in Renaissance society and stressing the fact that many were painted based on oral description of the model or even by studying the corpse of the model, making the posthumous portrait a genre in its own right (as in the portrait of an old man with his famously ugly nose by Ghirlandaio).

Top-quality illustrations make this book a valuable addition to any fine arts library.
