Renaissance Anthems is the third triple disc compilation to come from the Renaissance label in the last few years and once again they've flinched away from doing it properly. While the two-part Classics collections from a couple of years ago focused on the early '90s, this compilation leans more towards the late '90s and early '00s, but all three are essentially your standard issue "Dance Classics" compilation with a few Renaissance nods thrown in. Good for selling copies to the kids who don't own these tracks already on a billion previous identical compilations, but largely pointless to anyone looking for a definitive Renaissance retrospective.

Renaissance as a brand has always stood for two things: progressive house and a taste for dramatic melodic flourish in keeping with their extravagant aesthetics. Neither of these are evident in tracks like Firestarter or Starlight by the Supermen Lovers. It's been three compilations now and still we haven't seen possibly the ultimate Renaissance track- Bedrock's "For What You Dream Of (Full On Renaissance Mix)"- crop anywhere. That's nine discs without this track! They even had the cheek to throw in Heaven Scent instead on this compilation. Heaven Scent is a classic and no doubt it was caned at the time, but everyone has it on some retro compilation or other and it's hard to shake the feeling it's been included mainly for the trance kids.

Aside from some late 90s progressive inclusions and Perfect Motion yet again, too many of these tracks seem like random assorted 90s classics rather than representations of the true Renaissance sound. I'm still waiting for a compilation from the big R that collects the early-mid 90s progressive sound of Sasha, Digweed, Dave Seaman, Ian Ossia et al with suitable mixing style.

All credit to all concerned (particularly Alan Bremner who Mixed and Engineered the thing), this is an enjoyable mix of old house classics, many of which if you'll probably have on vinyl or whatever (if you're old and ugly enough!). Alan's Leftfield and Young MC mash up on CD1 is definitely a highlight for me.

When compared to all the other Renaissance compilations (i.e. albums one and two) it was disappointing to be honest. There was very few good songs on it and the remixes did not do it justice. In conclusion it was ok.

Having listened to this compilation twice now I can safely say that it's one of them mixes ware as you ether like it or you don't. Some of the tracks are quite uplifting & pleasing to the ear, however there are also tracks that are just drab & very boring.
