5.0 out of 5 stars Sophisticated Fun 12 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
Unless Gary Cole's "Midnight Caller" series is ever released on VHS or DVD this is the only television I'll be reviewing. I have this episode but they are all good and since several are fortunately still available here on Amazon.com I would like to use this as a review for all of the series.

This was a truly stylish television show that tapped into the kind of Stanley Donan light mystery romance that was then, and still is, missing from the movies. Pierce Brosnan and Stephanie Zimbalist were perfectly cast and the show only got better with each season. The Henry Mancini theme music captured the feel of this light and sophisticated show tinged with humor perfectly. It was as evocative and as much a part of the show as his "Peter Gunn" theme had been decades before.

Laura Holt (Zimbalist) couldn't get her private detective agency off the ground in spite of her skills until she invented the phantom agency head, Remington Steele. Business was booming and everything was going swell until Pierce Brosnan shows up and assumes the roll of the nonexistant Steele, both around town, and with clients. An uneasy alliance was formed that moved more and more towards the romantic as time went by.

Brosnan's Steele was debonair and stylish, his past a shady mystery ala' "To Catch a Thief". Each season Laura discovered new things about his past in Ireland and his exploits in other countries. Steele was also a film buff and constant references were made to films of the 30's and 40's he would recall pertaining to the case they were working on.

This series was fun and sophisticated entertainment that always made you feel good, light entertainment at it's best. It would be nice to see this translated to the big screen someday. This kind of entertaining film is missing from today's teen driven box office. Come to think of it, it is missing from the 'reality' driven television of today as well.

This was something really special in television. Every one of the episodes was enjoyable so you might as well start here and pick up the rest as you go. It is refreshing, a reminder of what television could, and should be....

5.0 out of 5 stars Vintage Steele is my favorite episode 6 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
Vintage Steele is a great episode, it is nice to see Laura having a secret or two of her own. The episode deals with her former live-in,Wilson, who after finding a dead body at a winery his bank is sponsoring, goes to Laura for help. You get to see another side of Laura , a " wild side ", that you normally do not get to see..she does a strip tease down to her teddy ! All in all a very enjoyable episode. Sting of Steele is 2nd on my list of favorites. Stephanie's dad Efrem , guest stars as Daniel Charmers , Remington's former mentor and friend. Beverly Garland ( from My Three Sons )guest stars as Laura's mother , Abigail Holt, the interaction between Laura and her mother is great. Daniel seeks Remington's help after a scam goes wrong and Daniel enlists Abigail's help as well as showing a little romantic interest and Laura does not approve !

3.0 out of 5 stars Steele searches for gold and helps an amnesiac 20 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
These are not some of the best episodes of the series. However, they belong to the first and second seasons respectively, which saw some of the best Remy moments. In 'Steele's Gold', Laura and Mr.Steele are involved in a search for gold, old Indian ancestors and a murderer. They once again spend a night together(romantic moment included), but that's all. Not many filmic references can be found, which can be regarded as negative(bad luck movie buffs)or positive, it is not such a pastiche as others, it all depends on the way you look at it and your personal taste.'Altared Steele', on the contrary, is a kind of pastiche of Hitchcock's 'Spellbound' and the story of a black widow, together with a poligamous husband. As I said, it's fine but not the best. Only recommended for Remy fans. If you are simply curious, I may recommend rather 'License to Steele', 'Thou Shalt not Steele', 'Tempered Steele', or'Vintage Steele'.
