What is Intense Pulse Light (IPL) and how does the i-LIGHT work?

The i-LIGHT features a hand-held device which directs an extremely short, intense pulse of light into the skin. The light energy is absorbed by the coloured pigments (melanin) in the hair follicle below the skin's surface. The energy temporarily stuns the follicle, disabling the growth mechanism in the hair and suppressing hair growth for smooth and hair-free skin for up to three months.

Easy to use and works in two simple steps

Step 1: Shave unwanted hair.

Step 2: Switch on the unit, then select your chosen intensity level and flash-mode. There are five intensity levels which deliver different levels of energy, starting low and increasing to high. Higher power levels are more effective at disabling hair follicles, but may also be more uncomfortable as more energy is being delivered to the skin. Just as higher settings on a blow dryer dries hair faster than lower settings, it may also be uncomfortably hot for one person’s scalp. Start at the lowest Power Level setting on the i-LIGHT and only proceed to higher settings after testing for comfort. There are two flash modes available. Opt for single flash for spot treatments or go for multi-flash for larger areas.

Place the hand-held device onto dry, clean skin and wait for it to flash. Press firmly onto the skin for full contact--anything less and the flash might not be activated. After each flash, move the device onto the next area to be treated and continue until you've covered the entire area.

Once treated, hair will begin to fall out after 7 to 14 days as during this period the hair follicles are entering a dormant state. The follicles will not produce new hair for up to 12 weeks leaving your skin silky smooth. After this time, hair will start to re-grow, but lighter, finer and less dense than before. Repeat the process as desired.

What to expect from the i-LIGHT

Studies have shown significant hair reduction after only a single treatment; however optimal results are obtained through repeated use. First-time users are recommended to re-treat areas every two to three weeks for three treatments until desired results are achieved. Though as an important side note, these are only approximations as results may vary between individuals.

It is essential to shave the area prior to using the i-LIGHT as longer hair can disrupt and compromise the success of the process. With shaven hair, the i-LIGHT can better distinguish between the hair and the skin, identifying the hair and focusing on the colour contrast between the hair and the skin.

Q: Is i-LIGHT the same as laser hair removal and is there any discomfort when using it?

A: No, i-LIGHT removes hair using Intense Pulsed Light technology to suppress hair’s growth and as such is more comfortable than laser or waxing, plus you don’t experience any of the skin irritations associated with these other methods.

Q: How quickly will I see results?

A: Clinical tests* have found the i-LIGHT is 89 per cent effective after just a single treatment.

Q: Can you use i-LIGHT on any part of the body?

A: Yes, on all areas of unwanted hair apart from the neck and face.

Q: How long does it take?

A: Different parts of the body have different treatment times and all times are average approximations that vary between individuals. As a rough guide, one full leg takes 15 minutes, one underarm area takes 1.5 minutes and it's also 1.5 minutes per side of the bikini line.

Q: Can i-LIGHT be used on any hair colour?

A: The i-LIGHT is effective on all hair types but less so on grey, white, red and light blonde hair. These hair colours contain less melanin than darker shades and so do not absorb as much of the light energy emitted making the process less efficient and successful.

Q: Can i-LIGHT be used on any skin type?

A: The i-LIGHT is effective on skin types equivalent to the Fitzpatrick scale 1 to 4. It will be less effective on type 5 as darker skin absorbs energy from the light meaning the hair follicle is unable to absorb enough of the energy.

i-LIGHT should not be used on skin type 6 as almost all of the light energy will be absorbed by the skin rather than the hair and this may cause irritation and discomfort. If unsure as to whether your skin type is suited to the i-LIGHT, refer to the Fitzpatrick scale diagram.

Replacement bulbs for consistent results

All bulbs degrade over time but the i-LIGHT maintains consistent results as the bulbs are replaceable. The unit keeps track of the bulb's life, so there's no need for you to log its usage, and the bulb life indicator LED will alert you that the bulb is coming to the end of its life.

Well, I have had this for a while now so I think it's time to review it!
I have tried all the usual methods of hair removal eg. shaving ( quick, but by the next day my legs feel stubbly, also ingrown hairs are a problem ) epilator, extremely painful and doesn't pluck out all the hairs.
Waxing, very painful indeed and leaves bumps and ingrown hairs.
So I forked out and bought this hoping that is wasn't a complete waste of money and time.
Well after a few months of use I can now say that I'm generally very pleased and quite a dab hand at zapping the hairs.
Everyone is different but i don't find it painful, even on the highest setting- slightly 'stingy' on my bikini line but I can take the pain!!! It doen't hurt at all on my legs. I think the combination of very dark hair and light skin is probably most likely to be more painful but you can turn the setting down if that's the case.
Yes, It is time consuming to do the whole leg but armpits and other smaller areas are a doddle.
I only shave my arm pits now before a session. I am shaving my legs much less too. The great thing is not getting that awful stubbly feeling eg. when you wear jeans and you can feel it rubbing. I was getting alot of ingrown hairs and mild folliculitis before but this has cleared up now. My husband and my lover have also commented on how smooth my legs are now ( and other areas ) ok, I'm joking about the lover bit, just checking you are still awake.
When I'm doing my legs I use a WHITE eyeliner pen that I bought at boots to section off areas and once I have zapped them I cross the area out. This works well for me ( please don't use anything like a dark pen or black eyeliner, you will burn as the light is attracted to the dark colour ) I also block out any moles with the white eyliner or white steri- strip, plus a scar on my leg. It is important that you don't zap dark moles or freckles as they will burn.

On the minus side, and these are areas I would expect Remington to improve on in newer models.
The window is very small for legs, perhaps a machine just for legs would be good, with a larger window.
The bulbs do not go very far, so if you think the machine is expensive it may not be for you as the major cost over it's lifetime is actually the replacement bulbs. One bulb probably does two whole legs, it depends on your size too and I'm quite slim, If you are large you will get through even more bulbs at �25 per bulb that is quite a bit.
The machine overheats quite easily which is frustrating as you have to wait for it to cool down.
Why can't you use it on your face? Well actually, I do ( as do other women who have reviewed it. ) I block out any areas that are sensitive with white eyeliner and close my eyes just incase, I have never had any problems and it has got rid of some annoying dark hairs on my chin!
Why doesn't it come with goggles? Remington say the light isn't harmfull but I will develop a twitch from repeatedly turning away! I think goggles would give peace of mind and can always be optional.
I'm going on holiday in the next few weeks so I'm going to have a good zapping session ( ? ) about a week before I go, hopefully I won't need to shave so much when I'm there.
To summarise I think this is a great innovative product and from looking at the cost of salon treatments it is fairly good value, although I'd like to see longer lasting bulbs, please! I recommend it!

I have been using this product for months now and I am very pleased.

I think the majority of bad reviews are from people who may be expecting too much. One person claims it has done nothing but then says they have used it for only 3 weeks!! I was told by a professional (friend in the beauty business) that hair grows in monthly cycles. By spacing out the treatments you cancel each monthly hair cycle. I try to use mine once every three to four weeks. With the first couple of treatments don't expect much, persist though and soon you will use it and only have to shave a couple of times between treatments. It wont be until you have come round full circle, about a year, that the cycle you last zapped will show effect by not growing back.
Also, people who wax inbetween and then say it isn't working.... The dark hair absorbs the light so when the light goes off on your skin it is attracted to the hair in the hair shaft and this is how it kills the follicle, if you have waxed there is no hair left in the follicle as you have pulled it out, thus nothing for the light to focus on and burn. You have to shave so the already grown hair doesn't absorb the light and waste it so to say.

My friend used this product a while ago and now is 95% hair free. She shaves the few remaining hair every few months, and I mean few.
As for the complicated safety instructions, they have to include that for the numpties but its pretty straight forward. Shave, zap areas which aren't sensitive, put back in the box. its so simple.
It is easy to use and if you put the telly on or some music and do it on a morning off it is hardly a chore. I wouldn't describe it as painful at all but you can feel it when it goes off. Not uncomfortable though.

This product is for someone who wants to be hair free and isn't looking for a quick fix magical solution. Within a year you'll nearly be there and on the way you will notice the difference.

The Remington IPL5000 i-Light arrived back in January, and we were very much put off by the comprehensive list of Don'ts in the manual. Eventually, my pair of brave young volunteers tried the Dos and after a couple of months, they have agreed that, yes, it does exactly what it claims. But it is not painless.

The effect when zapped is like receiving an instant hot sunburn, almost (but not quite) like an electric shock; this is on light skin, between 1 and 2 on the Fitzpatrick scale. However the unpleasant sensation and red mark soon fades and the skin looks normal again a few minutes later. One gets used to the burning hair smell. After a few weeks of trying to recover and re-grow, the cooked hair is significantly less strong than before, and is easily shaved back to prepare for the next treatment. Two months have passed, and for two of our family, the brave young volunteers, three sessions later there is very little hair still trying to show in the areas zapped.

It requires care and expertise to make sure one does not double-zap the same place in a session, or miss a bit, since it is hard to see what one is doing. It is a toss-up whether to move steadily along in the auto-zap mode or use manual single-step. My volunteer couple found that it was easier to work on each other than on themselves, and the rest of us heard sounds of much laughter from behind closed doors, so perhaps it was not as painful as they claimed. And they have persisted with it.

The Amazon product description is accurate, and the numerous warnings about dark skin colour, moles, any blemishes, any thin skin, the eyes, all MUST be heeded very carefully. It will be less effective on fair hair, since the pigment is required to absorb the heat from the flash before it can be effective. If you are in any doubt about using it, do not buy it. If you are confident it really is for you, then by all means give it ago.

It arrived in a neat and compact package, with a total of three flash-bulbs, which are necessary since the expected life is only 1500 flashes and they are expensive to replace, see Remington SIPL i-LIGHT Bulb for i-LIGHT Hair Removal System. However after three treatments each on two people we are still on the first bulb. Replacement of the bulb is very easy. Unlike the current offering there was no DVD included, so we cannot comment on that. The whole unit is very well made, and has a comfortably reassuring solid feel to it.

In summary. It is less painful than waxing or an epilator, but still not pleasant. It is not suitable for all people, and requires skill and patience in operation. However, it does work well, and after three treatments in two months, the hair growth is much weaker than before. Hence it gets four stars.
