Australia released, PAL/NTSC/Region 0 DVD: LANGUAGES: Greek ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), Greek ( Dolby Digital 5.1 ), English ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN (1.78:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Deleted Scenes, Interactive Menu, Scene Access, Trailer(s), SYNOPSIS: Based on a true story, this uneven but engaging musical drama sweeps through a turbulent 40 years in popular singer Marika Ninou's (Sotiria Leonardou) life -- and in the history of Greece -- starting with the singer's birth in Smyrna, Turkey in 1917. Ninou was deported to Greece along with all the other Greeks in Smyrna when she was only seven years old, and a few years later, her parents started a career as a musician and a singer in a nightclub/bar. In the short space of one decade, Ninou witnesses her father murder her mother, runs away from home, has a baby, and comes back to the nightclub to sing in an act with a childhood friend and a bouzouki player, Babis. Success finally comes big-time, but then Ninou's childhood friend is exiled for political reasons, and she and Babis leave for other venues. Although Ninou carries a torch for Babis, their relationship never seems to work out, and after many years and World War II go by, she sends her daughter away to a convent school and goes on a tour in America. At last, her fame may spread beyond the boundaries of Greece -- or so it seems. Sotiria Leonardou won the prize for 'Best Actress' at the 1983 Thessaloniki Film Festival, for her portrayal of Ninou, and the film itself tied for 'Best Picture,' and won three other awards as well (two 'Best Supporting Actor' prizes, and one for music). SCREENED/AWARDED AT: Berlin International Film Festival, Thessaloniki Film Festival, ...Rembetiko

Rembetiko 6 Nov 2008
Format:DVD
Rembetiko tells the tragic story of urban greek blues (Rembetiko music) singer Marika Ninou born in Smyrna, who was one of the few million Greeks forced to leave their homes in Asia Minor.
This very powerful and dramatic film (which is certainly not a pop-corn movie) is a great chronicle about the 1917 - 1956 era in Greece, and particularly focuses on the oppressed subculture lifestyle in a dark world where reality was filled with poverty and violence.
Marika was a singers in a Rembetiko group that performed in the then dope smoking music tavernas of Athens, Piraeus and Thessaloniki. The music itself which is influenced by Balkan and Middle east music, (unfortunately) disappeared along with the closure of such music bars and as far as I know, there are no existing original recordings. The music was all remade in the 80s. Note that if you are interested in such music and you are ever in Athens, there are several Rembetiko music tavernas in the area of Plaka which you should not miss (of course there is no dope smoking!).
I do not own the DVD because it's unfortunately currently only available on Region 1 (USA), but I certainly hope it will be released in an format for us living in Europe.
Saying this, I don't know if there are subtitles accompanying the music (for those who don't understand Greek), but if there aren't, then half the meaning of the movie is certainly lost, because the movie speaks through visuals and singing (the actual characters do not speak much).

Truthful revelation 4 Mar 2010

This is a long film but it really succeeds in telling of the origin of rembetiko. The environments in which rembetiko arose are faithfully reproduced. The music too is authentic, i.e., truly as rembetiko used to sound before it became appreciated by others.

An underrated movie. Although the production could had done better, I believe it is one of the greatest Greek movies ever...
