If , like me , you've got to know Greek music on holiday , have maybe heard a few tracks of big names like Vamvakaris , but are by no means an expert , then this set is a must - you'll discover sensational singers such as Rita Abatzi and Rosa Eskenazi , along with dozens of others , and you won't find discs anywhere more crammed with atmosphere than these - within minutes you'll be hanging a (maybe imaginary) cigarette from the corner of your mouth and launching yourself (if nobody's looking) into your own (totally inauthentic) zeibekiko. Wonderful stuff !
I've just ordered the second set , which has just appeared , and which prompted me to write this review - this music isn't easy to get hold of in the UK , and I think the producers of these discs are doing us a great service , and deserve every encouragement .

This four CD set has the best recording quality I have yet encountered on Rebetiko CDs, and I have an awful lot of them.

The producers have started with the best 78s that could be found, and played them on the highest quality equipment, with the right size stylus, and the right equalisation curve for 78s. This is a set that every lover of Rebetiko should own.

This is a well put together collection. I am no expert on this music, I've just heard it in Crete, and really enjoyed the experience. I bought this to learn more about the 'Greek Blues' and wasn't disappointed. There is a wide range on offer, different periods and performers, all contextualised in the notes. It is very atmospheric and gave me a good idea about where the music comes from and how it developed as the voice of the underclass and of rebellion against social mores of the times.
The transfers are good (much of this is well pre war) and the notes are comrehensive. Recommended.

A wonderful selection of Greek music from the underground. I particularly enjoyed each cd covering a different eras of music with it's correspondent style. Fantastic to listen to whilst cooking and entertaining family & friends.

Songs of the underworld 18 Dec. 2009
By Golovanov Alexey - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Perhaps one of the best introduction box sets - 4 CDs.
These songs are written and performed mainly by the underworld and for the underworld: love, yes, but treacherous love of a prostitute, afterlife - is there any women and hashish there? Jail - where the wardens broke his "baklama" (small bouzouki)... Rebetika (or rembetika) is a kind of Greek response to urban blues - when in the 20s thousands of ethnic Greeks have been deported from Minor Asia, they had to settle in shanty towns or ghettos, where they used to listen to a specific music brought from Minor Asia, composed and performed under the influence of hashish - full of oriental melodies and mesmerizing voices. That was the world of porters, spivs, pimps, whores, beggars... Cheap dreams, harsh reality, short-lived illusions... Try to watch the film by Costas Ferris "Rembetiko"Rembetiko: Special Edition and get the excellent book by Elias PetropoulosSongs Of The Greek Underworld: The Rebetika Tradition

Deep, soulful, and beautiful 25 Mar. 2007

I am a world music lover, especally Greek, Italian, Romanian, and Celtic. This CD is incredible, with music taken from 78rpm's from the 1920's through the 1940's. Unfortunately, I don't know the language, which made it more than surprising to find many of the songs were about drugs, liquour, etc. Of course about love, and lost love, but that I didn't need to be told. The music sinks deep into the soul, and I love it deeply. If you like Rembetika, you will love this too.

Outstanding compilation, well-curated. This is the real deal folks... Greek music with a heavy Turkish influence from the '40's and '50's... songs about love, loss, exile, and hashish hashish hashish... these 'mangas' were the original bad boys of modern Europe. This collection has been in my player in my shop non-stop for days.

The Underworld Never Sounded So Good! 21 Oct. 2012
By Hipcat - Published on Amazon.com

Wow! This collection is quite overwhelming at first, especially if you are not already familiar with this type of music. I had heard some Rembetika before, but just a song or two here and there. I liked what I had heard, so I decided to take the plunge and submerge myself in this box set.

First, I like how it is packaged. The 4 cd's are each in individual cases, so it's easy to just grab one to listen to in a car or wherever. The liner notes are just enough to keep your interest without being too scholarly or dense. They basically have a couple of sentences about the performer, plus usually the recording year and a sentence on what the song is about. There is also a brief glossary with some of the important rembetika terminology to further help understand the songs.

The most important thing, of course, is the music itself, which is great quality here, considering the age of the recordings. A few songs are not so great in quality, but they tend to improve as the recording equipment itself improved over the years, with the last disc of Greek songs sounding better than the older songs of mostly Turkish origin on the 1st disc.

The music is sung and played with passion and precision and make a wonderful addition to any collection of world music, or folk/blues music, as it is the music of the people and hard living. This is essential listening!
