A little confused --- 20 Oct. 2014

This book was a total downer. Definitely not a romance that sweeps you away. The tone of this book was nothing like the previous two books. Book one was fun. Book two was hard to finish - story was thin/weak. Book three was down right terrible. I'm disappointed I wasted time/money on this story. I understand a writer can miss the mark every now and then but after spending time/money on two bad stories in a row... sadly, I won't be reading this writer again. Sorry but there are too many good books out there and too little time to waste on reading bad stories.
*Not* a book club read.

Good Reading 20 Sept. 2014

Reluctantly Royal is the third story in the Nichole Chase’s “Royal” series. Like previous two stories in the series (Suddenly Royal and Recklessly Royal) it is set in fictional kingdom of Lilaria. The main characters of this story are Prince Maxwell Jameson Trevor D’Lynsal and Lady Meredith Thysmer.

Maxwell (Max) and Meredith are polar opposites in every possible way. Max is the middle child of the Lilaria’s royal family, but he is not very fond of the crown related duties; he particularly dislikes being in the spotlight. The reason lies in the fact that he found out from the tabloids that his father died. Meredith is, on the other hand, born in relative poverty, and she, together with her family, was invited recently to return to Lilaria in order to retrieve their title and lands. Also Meredith is a singer and is, actually, on her way to fame and success and the spotlights are inevitable part of her future career.

Two of them meet under very sad circumstances. Max was the one who had sought Meredith in London and informed her about her grandfather’s death. From London they went back together to Lilaria, and there the rest of the story took place. The story happened over the course of one week – a few days before Meredith’s grandfather funeral and a day after it. The part of the story related to Meredith being in Lilaria preparing the funeral has nice pace, and it is lovely written. But the part related to the Max and Meredith’s romance I find a bit rushed, because they felt the attraction, had sex, fell in love and Max proposed in the course of that one week. And all that while Meredith was going through very sad and hard period. Their relationship would be more realistic, and probably I would feel Meredith’s grief deeper if the pace of the romance was slower. Also the other shortfall of the story was Meredith relationship with her father. The author never fully revealed the root of his anger and bitterness toward Meredith. But even more frustrating for me was that their relationship never got a proper conclusion.

Regardless of these flows I enjoyed reading Reluctantly Royal. Besides being a funny and warm story, I enjoyed it because of the reappearance of the characters from the two previous books in the series. The other reason was that it had lovely characters and it was situated in magic Lilaria. For all of you who are planning to read this series please note it does not need to be read in order, but I highly recommend it because it will provide you better insight of the characters and it will give you better insight into royal family of Lilaria. I enjoyed all three books and they are definitely worth reading.

A good book to enjoy 29 Jan. 2015

Maxwell Jameson Trevor hates being a prince and his royal role. He doesn’t care for the limelight that comes with being the prince of Lilaria and only finds solace in his art studio. But when a newly discovered royal passes away, Maxwell’s brother asks him to go tell the old man’s granddaughter the news. With compassion and a strength Lady Meredith Thysmer needs in the days to come, Max finds he is drawn more and more to this charming woman.

Lady Meredith Thysmer is new to the royal life and she is determined to do what she can for herself and her son but when she gets bad news from Max, all her dreams come crashing down around her like a house of cards. In the days ahead, Meredith will lean on Max as she fights for herself and her son and in the process finds out what just makes this reluctant royal so down right appealing to her. But what happens when love finds its way into the mix?

I got to admit, I really loved Max. He was an intriguing character that just appealed to me. His disdain for all the trappings of being a royal prince, his love for art and his compassion when he goes to tell Meredith of her grandfather’s death stole my heart. The author does a great job in capturing this reluctant royals vulnerability and heart within the pages of RELUCTANTLY ROYAL. Meredith was a sweet and enjoyable foil to Max. These two meet under sad news and from there find they bring something out in one another, something good that just happens when you meet that right person. I found two items that I just didn’t understand or care for. What I found a bit unsatisfactory was how rushed their romance felt within the pages. The story takes place within one week yet the author never gives them time to revel in falling in love, the pace was just rushed for that aspect of the storyline. I felt with Meredith grieving and amid this sad time, the main characters should have taken a slower approach instead of the ‘meet, fall in love, have sex and then get married’ bit. I would have related more if they slowed that part of the story down, let me see how Meredith grieved and finally find love with Max. The other issue I had was Meredith’s relationship with her father. The author kept my attention on this part of the story yet never completed that sub-plot at all. It felt uncompleted to me and I was a little disgruntled that there was no conclusion in that portion of the story at all.

RELUCTANTLY ROYAL is a fun story that even with the two items I mentioned above, it didn't distract from my enjoyment of the book. The author does a good job in weaving a spell around you as you read the third book in the Royal Series and kept me glued to the pages till the very end. I plan to grab books one and two to read in order to see how those characters that we met in this book got their happy endings as well. If you enjoy a well written story with unique characters and an interesting setting in Lilaria, then I suggest trying the Royal Series. I look forward to seeing what else this author has in her backlist this winter.

Max and Meredith's Story 26 Aug. 2014
By The Fairest of All Book Reviews - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Reluctantly Royal is book 3 in Nichole Chase’s Suddenly series. This is Prince Max’s story – the one member of the Lilaria royal family who sees his position as more of a burden than an honor. Since his father’s untimely death, Max has shied away from the spotlight and done everything he can to stay out of the media’s grasp. But when he’s asked to notify Lady Meredith Thysmer about her grandfather’s death and bring her and her six year old son back for the funeral, Max decides to step outside of his comfort zone and offer Meredith his assistance.

Unlike Max, Meredith lives for the spotlight. As a singer and performer, being the center of attention is what feeds her soul and allows her to play multiple roles. Her reality as a single mother and daughter of an alcoholic is not how she wants to be recognized, and so, even back in Lilaria, she only allows small moments of who she really is to work themselves past the masks she wears.

Max and Meredith may be complete opposites in terms of their personalities and lifestyle, but they actually give each other what they so desperately need and deserve. Max allows her to be herself and takes care of and defends her and Marty with his life, and Meredith helps Max to step out of his shell and embrace every aspect of his life, even the ones he would rather not.

Max and Meredith’s story is a sweet and somewhat steamy read that illustrates what people are willing to do to be with someone who adds so much love and happiness to their life. Max works around Meredith’s stubbornness and need to handle everything on her own by claiming her and Marty as members of his family, and by Max proving to Meredith that he’s here to stay, Meredith allows her walls to be knocked down and her mask to be stripped away, offering Max exactly who he never knew he wanted but now cannot live without.

What I also loved about Reluctantly Royal is that readers get to reconnect with Samantha and Alex as well as Cathy and David. The Royal siblings are very close and to see them all work together and help out Meredith and Marty as well as to get Max to see what’s right in front of him made the story that much better. It’s a great way to end the Suddenly series.

Great end to the series 19 Jan. 2015

4.5 stars

Suddenly Royal, the first book in this series, is a permanent favorite of mine and is one of the few books that I own in paperback. Recklessly Royal didn't hold quite the same allure for me, but Reluctantly Royal finished out the series with same magic that I felt in the first book. Max and Meredith were wonderful, but I have to say young Marty stole the show- and my heart!

Max has never been a fan of being in the spotlight as his royal duties require ever since he found about the death of his father from an overeager member of the media before his family could get to him. He prefers the peaceful quiet of his art and the outdoors to attending functions, unveiling plaques and the multitude of other requirements that the royal life entails.

Meredith has not had an easy life, so when her grandfather claimed the title of the Duke of Thysmer, they both saw it as a second chance at a real life while helping out those around them. Unfortunately Meredith's father has never been the same since her mother abandoned them, and he has turned into a difficult to deal with raging alcoholic. To save her young child from his influence and verbal tirades, she moved to London and has been building a career as an actress and singer. Her success threatens to come to a screeching halt when Max arrives to inform her of her grandfather's death and her need to return to Lilaria for a time.

Relationships are not part of the plan for Max, but he admires Meredith's strength and fire, and his protective instincts kick into high gear when he realizes that she and Marty are going to be left to fend for themselves with her father once they arrive back in the country. Add in a little meddling by his sister Cathy and sister-in-law Sam, and Max finds himself far more involved in their lives than he ever anticipated as he finds ways to both entertain and distract Marty. Strangely, he can't find it in himself to get too worried about it though.

Meredith knows that the life she wants to live represents everything that he hates the most, but neither of them can deny the attraction- and everyone around them can't help but notice the sparks flying between them, even Marty who definitely doesn't mind. The precocious little boy was a wonderful part of this story, and I loved that we got to see so much of Sam, Alex, Cathy and even Chadwick from the prior books. I was a little disappointed that the queen didn't make an appearance though; with the emphasis on family throughout this series, I expected to see her interact with the group as their stories were wrapped up.

As I said earlier, I thought this was a fabulous end to the series- I don't want to give away anything else about the story but I definitely recommend adding it to your TBR list. The paperback copy of this one will be taking up residence next to Suddenly Royal on my bookshelf very soon!
