Entertaining and insightful peek into a British-Muslim family,
By
This review is from: The Reluctant Mullah (Paperback)
This debut novel by Sagheer Afzal is a both entertaining and realistic in its characterisations of a largely British-Pakistani cast. The basic thread of the storyline is that the main character Musa has been set a one month time limit to find his own wife or he will have to follow his grandfathers' wishes and marry his choice. There are plenty of lighter moments in his journey and also plenty of darker moments that do not shy away from issues facing the British-Muslim population (lack of education, drugs etc). The themes contained in this book mean that those from a British-Asian background will identify with some or all of them and also provide a very insightful portrayal for anyone else, especially the role of religion in the lives of the young characters who are by and large doing their best to bridge the lifestyles of two very different cultures. The only slight letdown is the overly dramatic ending and the slightly caricature characters in the novel. However, these are small gripes in what is a largely excellent debut novel.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!,

This review is from: The Reluctant Mullah (Paperback)
This is Fantastic Novel. Well paced with good characterisation, witty, entertaining, and generally very easy to read. A Comedic Tragedy. I read from start to finish in one sitting. As a first time author, Sagheer Afzal shows how it should be done. I look forward to the next installment...

A fascinating and funny insight,
By
This review is from: The Reluctant Mullah (Paperback)
I have little knowledge of the Quran or Islam so I was not sure how I'd feel about this book, but I found it funny throughout and gave me a very interesting insight into Islamic families and the pressure of arranged marriages.
The characters seemed incredibly realistic and all situations were filled with great humour. I enjoyed Musa's various meetings with prospective brides and the interactions with family and friends. Chapters set in the Islam centre also taught me a great deal about the Quran and gave balanced views on its interpretations. The book was well written and I could see this book being turned into East is east style film or TV show. A very enjoyable book from start to finish.
