Product Description

No story has more significance than this: the death and resurrection of Jesus. But somehow the oft-repeated tale of Christ's passion can become too familiar, too formalized, for us to experience its incredible immediacy.The meditations in Reliving the Passion, which received a Gold Medallion Award in 1993, follow the story as given in the gospel of Mark---from the moment when the chief priests plot to kill Jesus to the Resurrection. But these readings are more than a recounting of events; they are an imaginary reenactment, leading the reader to re-experience the Passion or perhaps see it fully for the very first time.As only a great storyteller can, Walter Wangerin enables the reader to see the story from the inside, to discover the strangeness and wonder of the events as they unfold. It's like being there. In vivid images and richly personal detail, Wangerin helps us recognize our own faces on the streets of Jerusalem; breathe the dark and heavy air of Golgotha; and experience, as Mary and Peter did, the bewilderment, the challenge, and the ultimate revelation of knowing the man called Jesus.'The story gets personal for every reader,' writes Wangerin, 'for this is indeed our story, the story whereby we personally have been saved from such a death as Jesus died.'No, there is not another tale in the world more meaningful than this---here is where we all take our stands against sin and death and Satan, upon this historical, historic event. I consider it a holy privilege to participate in it retelling.'Read this book slowly. Read it with a seeing faith. Walk the way with Jesus. We, his followers of later centuries, do follow even now. Read, walk, come, sigh, live. Live! Rise again!'

No story has more significance than this: the death and resurrection of Jesus. But somehow the oft-repeated tale of Christ's Passion can become too familiar, too formalized, for us to experience its incredible immediacy. The meditations in Reliving the Passion, which received a Gold Medallion award in 1993, follow the story as given in the gospel of Mark -- from the moment when the chief priests plot to kill Jesus to the Resurrection. But these readings are more than a recounting of events; they are an imaginary reenactment, leading the reader to re-experience the Passion or perhaps see it fully for the very first time. As only a great storyteller can, Walter Wangerin takes his readers inside the story of Christ’s passion. Drawn from the Gospel of Mark, Reliving the Passion translates the events—from the moment when the chief priests plot to kill Jesus to the Resurrection—into the realm of feeling, image, and experience. In richly personal detail, Wangerin helps us recognize our own faces in the streets of Jerusalem; breathe the dark air of Golgotha; and experience, as Mary and Peter did, the bewilderment, the challenge, and the ultimate revelation of knowing the man called Jesus. A perfect devotional for the Lenten season.

I could not put this book down - prepare to be changed! 24 Feb 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Wangerin's writing style is so refreshing - it brings the story of Christ to life in a new and exciting way. The emotive writing style draws you in as the reader and you cannot put the book away - I read and re-read the crucifixion chapters and came away almost breathless with a renewed sense of what Christ went through for me! The cast of characters that were involved also come to life with all the passion and "realness" of that day.

A "must-read" for all Christians and skeptics 24 Nov 1997
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This powerful book transports the reader to Jesus' last week on earth. Wangerin pulls the reader into the emotion and reality of the crucifixion and the events leading up to it. I felt convicted and moved by the sacrifice made on my behalf in a new way. Highly recommended!

Pure Poetry 6 Mar 2002

This is my third year to read "Reliving the Passion". It is pure poetry at its finest and Walter Wangerin Jr. transports you back to the days leading up to and through the Passion. Add this book to you library and make it a tradition each year at Lent. Also check out his book for Advent!

The difference between shallow happiness and a deep, sustaining joy is sorrow. Happiness lives where sorrow is not. When sorrow arrives, happiness dies. It cant stand pain. Joy, on the other hand, rises from sorrow and therefore can withstand all grief. Joy, by the grace of God, is the transfiguration of suffering into endurance, and of endurance into character, and of character into hopeand the hope that has become our joy does not (as happiness must for those who depend upon it) disappoint us. "e;

Jesus has many who love His Kingdom in Heaven, writes Thomas a Kempis in The Imitation of Christ, but few who bear his Cross. Many follow Jesus to the Breaking of the Bread, but few to the drinking of the Cup of His Passion. They who love Jesus for His own sake, and not for the sake of comfort for themselves, bless Him in every trial and anguish of heart, no less than in the greatest joy. "e;

Does the motive of a sinits rationale, its reasonsmake it any less a sin? Isnt the betrayal of the sovereignty of the Lord in our lives always a sin, regardless of the factors that drove us to betray him? Yes! Yet we habitually defend ourselves and diminish our fault by referring to reasons why we had to do it. We sinners are so backward that we try to justify ourselves by some condition which preceded the sin. Motives console us. Thats why we want so badly to have and to know them. "e;
