Product Description

Product Description

The people of the Middle Ages did what the Church told them God required. The sovereign consumers of the modern world `pick and mix' their own religions, Starting with the Reformation and ending with New Age spirituality, this book offers a comprehensive sociological description and explanation of the changes in the religious life of Western society that have accompanied modernization. This major new book from a leading sociologist of religion tracks the Church's changing role from monolith to Sect, to Denomination, and at the end of the twentieth century, to the Cult. What were the forces that brought about this change? What is the real role for the Church in the modern world? Professor Steve Bruce answers these questions in a clearly argued and accessible way. Including substantial chapters on religion in the USA, religion and ethnicity, and the New Age, Religion in the Modern World is an invaluable resource for students of sociology, religion or history and anyone with a real interest in looking behind the headlines for the place of religion in today's society.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good reference, 11 April 2000
By Jacob Sepelak - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Religion in the Modern World: From Cathedrals to Cults (Paperback)
I bought this book a while ago, and have read it through a few times. It should--in my opinion--be put on every list of required reading for students of religious history. Bruce presents a well-written and insiteful commentary on the development of various religious sects through-out history, leading right up to present day.

The only two complaints I have about the book are -it was not longer, -the endnotes are at the end of each chapter, instead of collected at the end of the book. But that's just my personal preference.

On the whole, it was a good read and a good re-read (the true test of *any* book. I strongly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, 20 Sep 2009
By Ibrahim A. Sarraj - Published on Amazon.com
This book, in great detail, explains the modernization of Christianity from the Reformation to the 21st century. A great book to read or even re-read. I was skeptical of the material when I first bought the book but the second I read through the first chapter, I was hooked. Not only do I recommend the book, but I recommend the author, Steve Bruce. If you get a chance, read most of his books.
