This book has a tutorial type approach which is about as close to a live tutorial situation as it gets. Excellent text and illustrations

You can learn a lot from Chris Pye,
By Ricardo - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Relief Carving in Wood (Master Craftsmen) (Paperback)
I'm a novice wood carver and have been reading everything that I can about the subject. This includes both in print and on the Internet.
After viewing Pye's website, I decided to purchase one of his books, and this is the one that I chose. I learned more in the first few chapters than I had learned elsewhere after months of reading. Just his explanation of grain is worth the price. You may want to check out his website before purchasing, but I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn woodcarving. 3 of 4 people found the following review helpful:

By D. P. Lance - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Relief Carving in Wood (Master Craftsmen) (Paperback)
It's by Chris Pye that says it all. An excellent teacher. Lots of good advice and some good projects to start you off on the right foot. projecs are easy but challenging enough to keep you interested. It's all about relief carving no drug store indians or cow pokes,
