5.0 out of 5 stars Double Whammy - It Don't Get No Better 5 Nov 2006
Format:Audio CD
The unbelievable Gatton never played better than on this remarkable outing with young Hammond B3 jazz wizard Joey De Francesco. The two virtuosi strike sparks off each other throughout a brilliantly sustained set of primarily jazz tunes, aided by Gatton's then regular rhythm duo. Most of Danny's albums must be regarded as essential listening for anyone professing any interest in top-of-the-range guitar improvisation, but in my view none of them surpasses the inspired levels reached on this, probably the final studio album of his tragically curtailed career. Don't miss this one - it's a treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding musicians 24 Jun 2004
Format:Audio CD
This CD is a work of art. Smoking performance by all of the musicians on it. Danny Gatton is a legend here in my hometown of Maryland and we all love his work, especially when he's with a a great line-up of other dudes. BUY THIS ALBUM, you won't regret it one bit !

5.0 out of 5 stars A SUPERB pleasure to hear 2 Oct 2008
By History Reader - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
WOW......the audacity of some of these reviewers! Danny Gatton: psychobilly, unpolished, technically limited, not a jazz player, in over his head....

What utter purist dribble.

Danny Gatton was simply one of the most phenomonal guitar virtuosos in recorded history. No single style or genre could contain such an enormous talent. His mixing and blending of many different styles, the nearly unlimited technique, the soulful ability to create deeply touching melodies spontaneously has not been equaled or approached.

This is a superb album that amply displays Danny's fabulous fiery Jazz interpretations.

Disregard the nonsense of those previous reviewers. You may not like Danny Gatton, which is your choice, but to speak derogatorily of this man's music and ability merely shows you to be an ignorant fool.

RIP Danny! Thank you for all the GREAT music!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just pure energy, style and licks to spare! 5 July 2006
By Steve Grey - Published on Amazon.com

This is the second version of this CD I have owned I like it that much that I gave one away reluctantly to a pal in England. From the moment this album starts you know you are in for a ride, and what a ride it is. From the beauty of 'The Chess Players' to the sheer intensity of 'Gearheads' , this album just overwhelms the listener with an ever-changing palette of different sounds. Is it country? Is it Jazz, Is it Rockabilly?. This is the kind of music you can't put into a category....simple as that.

One reviewer likes Hank Garland...sure, but that is comparing apples to oranges..for a start, there is NO-ONE like Joey DeFrancesco around...and the sound that these two guys produce is totally unique....it's a pity Danny is no longer with us, another one of these collaborations would have surely been a milestone, if this isn't already.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whew! 4 May 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

This album is simply scary. Gatton is on fire and DeFrancesco never gives in. They go toe to toe and duke it out with some masterful soloing. A must have for guitar and/or hammond B3 fans. Is it possible to give six stars?

5.0 out of 5 stars Holy Chops Batman!!! 19 Jan 2005
By Juevos Grandes - Published on Amazon.com

I was a sound tech for a number of years. I used to have this CD in my intermission rotation. No matter what genre of music the audience came to see, they were all blown away by the smokin' chops displayed by both musicians on this disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unrelentingly Smokin' 8 Dec 1999
By Richard P. Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I'm sure they had a couple of assistants with fire extinguishers in the studio to put out the flames that were, no doubt, started by Gatton and DeFrancesco during their soloing! This is one HOT album. The playing is jazzy, funky, tasty and brutally over the top [your jaw will hurt from hanging all the way down to the floor throughout the course of the album...]. Add to this the beautiful production values [beefed-up bass response, too] and you have a world-class album in every sense of the word. A must for any jazz head.
