Product Description

For five pounds sterling, the convict was hers. Though Cassie hated the slave trade, her Virginia plantation demanded the labor, and she knew this fevered man would surely die if she left him. But as his wounds healed, and as his muscled chest bronzed from the sun, Cassie realized Cole Braden was far more dangerous than his papers had indicated--for he could steal her breath with a glance, or lay siege to her senses with a touch.

Abducted, beaten, and given a new name, Alec Kenleigh went from master of an English shipbuilding empire to fourteen years of indentured servitude in the American colonies. There, he was known as Cole Braden, a convicted ravisher and defiler of women. While he longed to ravish the auburn-haired beauty who owned him, he knew his one hope of earning her love--and his freedom--was to prove his true identity. Only then could he turn the tables and obtain his ... Sweet Release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slow starter but quickly turns to page turner 6 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
After reading the first few chapters I wasn't sure I was going to like this book and contemplated deleting it from my Kindle....I'm so glad I kept going. At first I thought this was going to be your typical historical romance but once the story moves to Virginia where Alec/Cole is sold to Cassie the story develops in to a gritty and brutal account of slavery/servitude, deception and forbidden love. I loved this book and could not put it down ... I immediately downloaded the 2nd book - Carnal Gift (Jamie's story) and now I am really looking forward to the 3rd book (The story of Nicholas).

4.0 out of 5 stars Great tale, but not the best in the series. 22 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The amazon blurb tells you pretty much all of this tale, so there's no point in repeating any of it. But, I will tell you that it is a very steamy historical romance, with the author having done her research about the period. At the start, with the bitterness between Cassie and Alec/Cole, I wasn't sure that he could be man enough to get over the fact that she basically owned him, but boy, did he get his own back in the bedroom!!

This tale introduces, IMO, the best male lead of this trilogy, Jamie, Cassie's brother, who goes on to have his own tale, Carnal Gift (very aptly named) in the next book in the series. That book has to be the 5* Keeper of the lot, unlike this one, which whilst very well-written, was too angsty and brutal for me to want to re-read it; it's still doing the rounds at my local library!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sweet first time book!! Way to go Pamela!! 14 April 2003
By Deborah MacGillivray HALL OF FAME VINE VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I have seen in many reviews of historical romances (and have felt it myself) there is a dearth of historical in historical romances. The only difference between the historical romance and a contemporary is they ride horses instead of drive cars. Often it's REALLY hard to tell WHAT period you are in because so much of the historical has been cut away. The editors and publishers push for the leads to be on 'centre stage' and unless the history is driving importance, then they cut it. Which is a shame. There are a bunch of wonderful writers that can give you history AND ROMANCE. The trend came about because of competing with the net, they wanted a faster, leaner reads. Which is fine for a spell, but people are tired of this. Books are expensive and they want MORE for the money. They wants the sweeping panorama of history in all it's glory.
I am GLAD to say Pamela Clare gives you a TRUE historical romance. It has romance, passion AND history. I almost felt like I had picked up a pre-net Historical romance - so a BIG round of applause for Clare writing this wonderful book and to DORCHESTER Publishing for ONCE AGAIN giving their writers the room to do books THEIR WAY!!! So if you wish for a historical romance that is MORE....please give this first time author a chance. You will not regret it!!
I applaud Clare for dealing with the period, dealing with bondsman and slaves in a tender, yet not flinching fashion. I think many writers stay away from the period of 1700-1870s US because of the slavery issue. If you are accurate you turn people away, if you a kinder gentler version of GWTW people dismiss you. Clare chose this period and gives excellent treatment. And kudos to both her and her publisher!!
Alex Kenleigh is a rich English shipbuilding.

Here we go I thought, yet another romantic novel set in London with the dashing, wealthy hunk, quickening breaths as he kisses her hand! All I can say is I was blown away at the quick turn of events which land our hero on another continent suddenly immersed into another world and at the lowest rung of society's ladder. Trust and true love evolve between the two main characters and whilst it undoubtedly has a happy ending the journey there is captivating - ideal for a weekend under the duvet!
