It has been just over a year since `Houston' turned the melodic rock/AOR world up-side-down with the release of their self titled debut album. The Swedish duo has returned with an extensive EP, "Relaunched" featuring seven cover versions along with two songs of their debut in acoustic versions.
Once again "Houston" is lead singer Hampus Hank Erix and drummer Freddie Allain featuring guest musicians Laurie Mansworth on guitar, keyboardist Mark Mangold and Eliz Ryd who contributes female vocals. The team suceeds in "Houston"-izing this selection of classic and lesser known AOR gems, which prove perfectly compatible with the distinct vintage-melodic AOR sound of the band.
In particular the Michael Bolton song "Carrie" is nothing less than a genuine AOR statement when delivered by "Houston", equally impressive is the keyboard driven "Don't you know what love is", a song close to "Houston"s own songwriting that definitely hits the spot. One could also characterize as essential the newly composed "Without your love", a melodic rock duet between Hampus and Eliz Ryd (of "Amaranthe") making direct reference to the "Houston" song "Truth Slips".
Overall, "Relaunch" is an inescapable buy for anyone who enjoyed the "Houston" debut; it seems that most fans of the genre can not get enough of "Houston" and "Relauch" is the perfect means to keep one going in anticipation of their second album.
