guide to couple relationships,
By
This review is from: Relate: Seven crucial questions to answer before you say 'I do': Before You Say "I Do" - Seven Crucial Questions to Ask Yourself Before Marriage (Paperback)
If you are thinking about marriage, or struggling within a relationship, this book is an easy-to-read guide to the ups and downs of couple relationships.Elizabeth Martyn draws on the experience of Relate counsellors to illustrate the possible sticking points for couples, and suggests alternative ways to cope with money problems, sexual incompatibility, to accept changes, and more. There are check lists so you can find out - if you are honest - whether you spend enough time with each other, how work affects your relationship, what's really important in your lives, and whether infidelity would be a serious threat to your marriage. The format of the book makes it easy to dip into any area which is causing you or your partner concern.

Useful and concise self help handbook,

I liked this book because it contains lots of short case studies of genuine couples, people who have come up against the real and ordinary obstacles that relationships throw into the spokes of life. I particularly liked the fact that some of those relationships didn't survive the storm - too many of these books seem to be unrealistically upbeat about solving marital conflict.
I did feel that there are some aspects of one's own family and marital history that are not examined in much depth so I'm assuming that you'd need to have a reasonable level of self awareness to benefit from reading this book, and I would say it should be read in tandem with something like 'The Hard Questions: 100 Essential Questions to Ask Before You Say "I Do" ' by Susan Piver, which covers a really wide range of seemingly innocuous topics that could easily tip a fragile marriage over into a battlefield. As they say, forewarned is forearmed...

Would definitely recommend for all engaged couples,
This review is from: Relate: Seven crucial questions to answer before you say 'I do': Before You Say "I Do" - Seven Crucial Questions to Ask Yourself Before Marriage (Paperback)
This book does not have a religious nature, it is practical, realistic, positive and sensible about marriage. I found it incredibly useful and is really thought provoking. Essential reading and an excellent alternative to religious marriage preparation classes or otherwise or a great pre-cursor as it points out some of the reasons why you might want to seek advice.
