COVER COPY

Duncan Maxwell, laird of Lochmorton Castle, gets the shock of his life when he discovers the reiver captured in a raid on his lands is not a boy, but a young woman. Although she flatly refuses to tell him her name or how she came to be riding with a raiding party, Duncan cannot countenance imprisoning a woman in his dungeon but neither can he release her without compensation. Unable to ransom her back to her family, he treats her as an honored—though exceptionally well-supervised—guest. He takes to calling her Reva and determines to seduce the truth of her identity from her. There’s just one problem—the reiver may steal his heart before he can reveal her secrets.

This had the makings of what I have read several times before as a full-length novel, set in historical Scotland. It was a tad too short to make it excellent, but that would have been easy to fix.

As it is, it is a short tale of Duncan Maxwell, laird of Lochmorton, whose men have captured whom they believe to be a young lad, but said young lad in fact turns out to be a young lass. She refuses to give her name, as by her own admission, if her clan seemed to be in danger of capture during their raid of Lochmorton lands, she was to give herself up as prisoner, as they figured Duncan wouldn't ever kill a woman; i.e. she was a deliberate distraction. She cannot reveal her name, as to do so would identify her clan, and reveal her as a descendant of Maxwell's mortal enemy.

So, the tale is along the lines of them falling in love, her refusing to give her name, and he proposing marriage, which she accepts, despite knowing that they can never have a marriage ceremony, as to do so, would require her true name...

There is a tiny touch more to it, and, had this tale taken place over a longer period, with some more of the realities of life during that time intruding, it could have been a really excellent tale. It needed some more intrigue, some emotional anguish, a painful, seemingly permanent parting of the ways before reuniting - which it didn't have. It was a touch too quick and convenient in its ending, but it did work in a novella. I just wish there had been more to it.

I liked it, nice and punchy. It's not going to set the world on fire, but entertaining enough. Would read more by the author. x

2.0 out of 5 stars Short and shallow but nice to read 19 Mar 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I had read reviews that said this book was too short but as a short story I knew what I was getting. It's a sweet story in essence but because it seemed a tad hurried, the romance was mere lust and the characters had no backstory nor deeper motive. The mention of love after such a skin deep story was a little odd and in the whole story I saw only a peppering of Scottish vernacular, irritating when the rest of the story was written in standard English. Altogether not the best story on Scottish highland romance but alright!

4.0 out of 5 stars Well, I liked it! 21 Aug 2012

This is a short historical romance about a Scottish laird who captures a reiver (raider) only to discover 'he' is a girl. The romance is sweet, not too steamy and I enjoyed reading it. It's well-written, has sympathetic characters and, despite the short length, has a decent plot. And it's free. Recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Thankful for the fact it was free! 3 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This story is short.

It has a beginning..........and it has an end!

We go from the capture of said Reiver, who loathes her captor.

Then several weeks disappear with no explanation, and suddenly the Reiver is in love with her captor, as he is with her, without explanation of why????

This story makes no sense.

As for the preview of Carnally Ever After, from the opening few pages, I hope this is NOT classed as romance, and is firmly placed in the 'erotic' sections. Then again, if it follows the lines of the Reiver, then it will be a Wham! Bam! Thank you, Ma'am, and it will be like the now defunct News Of the World!
