4.0 out of 5 stars More sensible than most self-help books 9 July 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book gives advice on understanding and self-help for some of the more common problems or "hang-ups" from which most people are likely to suffer. The discussion is eclectic and generally avoids psychobabble. Although (hopefully) not all of the "lifetraps" discussed will be relevant to everyone, the book is excellent value, and much cheaper than a course of psychoanalysis. Most people reading and acting upon this book will find greater fulfilment and will be better adjusted.

4.0 out of 5 stars one of the best self help books 24 April 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is an important book to deal with common self defeating patterns in life.It takes a compassionate view of personality dysfunctions andcreates the hope that things can be changed. It does not offer easy answers and it is obvious that one has to work hard to effect changes. To the motivated it gives a key to work on their problems. It is good value for money and I will strongly recommend it.The self questionnaires are thankfully short but comprehensive. The lay out could be improved for easy readability:there are too many fonts and tables distracting the flow of main text.

4.0 out of 5 stars It really does help! 17 Feb 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I have read other self-help books before but none like this. It really has helped me! It has helped me to understand why I behave in certain ways and gives practical, realistic advice about how I can change. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't provide miraculous solutions to all my difficulties, but it has certainly given me hope for the future. Easy to read as well - I picked the chapters that were most relevant to me and read those first. I hope that other people benefit from this book too - thanks to the authors.

This is a book for anyone who finds themselves falling into the same life traps time after time after time. We are all told that we learn by our mistakes, but so often we don't.
How often have we heard ourselves, or someone else saying "why do I always make the same mistakes, particularly in relationships?, why do I always seem to go for the same type of person? why is the outcome always the same?", well, if you can hear yourself or others saying those words, this book is for you, and will help you to see through the emotional, subconcious fog that stops you from becoming the person you know exists deep down inside waiting to see the light of day.
Everyone should read this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely worth it! 16 Feb 2007
By Puzzle
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was quite sceptical when I was first told to read this book because I have read other books on cognitive therapy and I had been bitterly disappointed but this book changed things for me. I also found that how I felt was completely normal at the time because I still get the same reaction from others to whom I recommend this book. All one has to do is to be really open to change and the suggestions and advice in this book can definitely change one's life for the better. It is not easy to leave old habits behind and to learn new ones and I often wondered, whilst reading it, if I could be bothered with this life long task. Because remember, it IS a life long task. It is a journey that you have to embark on to change years and years of ingrained thinking patterns which is ever so hard to, first, get your head around and then secondly, to actually action. But please try it and do not despair because with the help of this wonderful book everyone can obtain the ability to break free from life traps that prevent us from living a psychologically better life, becoming more self-aware and altogther calmer and more in control. I really suggest that you take the chance! You will thank me for it later...

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended by clinical psychologist 25 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
I am a clinical psychologist who practises schema therapy. This is the book which we recommend to all clients as an adjunct to therapy, so for this reason alone, I would recommend it. This book is based on a well-evidenced form of therapy (schema therapy), especially developed for personality disorder. It will be of use or any individulals who identify areas of their life in which they repeatedly struggle, and who "recognise there's a problem but feel unable to change". As a caveat, individuals with more complex problems may find that the self-help book alone only goes some way, and they would perhaps benefit also from individual therapy, as is recommended in the book itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars I might be able to re-invent myself 10 Dec 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I started using this book in therapy about 3 months ago. Until then I struggled to find any maps out of the negative patterns I found myself in. This books helps you to label your demons (or lifetraps as they call them), helps you create a map to steer around them by dealing with the past and offering tools to manage them. It's easy reading, a great almanac to get you through. Well worth it if you know life could be brighter, but your not sure where to start.

Reinventing Your Life provides a detailed self-test that will help pinpoint "lifetraps" or self-defeating behaviors that cause us to make the same mistakes over and over. By identifying specific areas where you are vulnerable (dependence, emotional deprivation, social exclusion, etc.) the reader can study those areas that pertain to them, and gain insight into the origin of the problem. Also, steps to get past these bad habits we've become comfortable with and accustomed to. A great help.
