Having enjoyed Gliere's 2nd and 3rd symphonies, I hesitated before acquiring his 1st symphony as British critics have always been rather dismissive of it (the Penguin Guide for one.) Having listened to it, I can't understand why. It's true the perky little folk melody that opens the symphony is rather trite (so in my opinion is the one that opens the Rach 3 piano concerto) but before long Gliere develops it with thrilling brass-heavy bravura . Flamboyant orchestration, good tunes, plenty of those sinuous melodies that Gliere was rather good at and even a touch of Russian soulfulness make for a highly enjoyable listening experience and this Chandos version is superbly played and recorded. But see if you can track down the early 1950s recording on the Consonance label of the elderly Gliere conducting his own work - the recording is surprisingly good for its age and the performance, with the harsh brass characteristic of the Soviet era, is electrifying (you also get a marvellous performance of his mellifluous harp concerto as a bonus.) Gliere's 1st symphony, in my opinion, easily ranks alongside any of those of Balakirev, Borodin and Glazunov, to all of whom he was doubtless indebted.

The selection from Gliere's ballet the Red Poppy is also most enjoyable but in my opinion the whole ballet is worth listening to, so if you're tempted then take a look at the superb Naxos recording which I've also reviewed.

Reinhold Gliere 29 Aug 2011

Gliere is one of the many neglected composers. I cannot recall hearing a Gliere piece in my extensive concert going in London and New York. I already had the other two CD's from Sir Edward and the BBC Phil set, and once again, was not dissapointed. The music is lush and simply a joy to listen too. Highly recomended.

Glière: Symphony No. 1, The Red Poppy Suite 20 Sep 2013
By Bjorn Viberg - Published on Amazon.com

Glière: Symphony No. 1, The Red Poppy Suite is a 1993 Chandos under the direction of Sir Edward Downes. David Nice has written the music notes. One can say that Rheingolds sound is a mix of late romantic and a touch of Wagnerian sound. I very much enjoyed this fine recording. Highly recommended. 5/5.
