As I understand it, this somewhat legendary performance by Nico has been available on various bootlegs over the years, but this is the first official release. I've never heard any of these before, so it's possible that all the recordings have this same problem...

However - it is one of my pet hates to hear artificial periods of silence inserted between the songs on a live album, and unfortunately, this is what happens here. Every song is faded down abruptly at the end, then it's (sometimes very clumsily) faded up at the beginning of the next song. It completely destroys the 'live' atmosphere of the recording. Sometimes the between-song chatter can be fascinating to hear, but in this case it has been denied to the listener and as this is a CD, there was no need at all to edit the recording for runtime.

I'd probably have given this 4 stars, if not for this issue - as the sound quality is actually very good.

Is there a better recording of this event? OK, so let's not fret about the sound quality. It's not great, but it's all there is. As such it's a miracle. Nico at her absolute best ; her voice cuts through the ambient noise. For the price it's a not a rip.
