The latest offering from the legendary South African trio is one of their finest yet. The Mahotella Queens (composed of Hilda Tloubatla, Nobesuthu Mbadu and Mildred Mangxola) have done it once more; showing the world that they are truly the queens of South African music. "Reign and Shine" is the UK version of the same album that was released in South Africa around a few months ago - with three extra tracks added from another new album recorded in France.
The opening track is sublime indeed; "Amazemula", composed by Hilda Tloubatla and with lead vocals by Nobesuthu Mbadu, is a gem of a song. The way in which the Queens start off in three-part harmony is desirable, and after the first verse, a deep male vocal and a drum beat is added to the chorus. The track makes wonderful listening - as does the Queen's re-recording of the track they did with the late great Simon "Mahlathini" Nkabinde, "Kazet". This version is almost as great as the first version, and exactly twenty years after that first recording of Kazet (from 1986's "Melodi Yalla" album) the Queens still sound like young choirgirls, even if they are grandmothers now!
Also contained here are a number of a cappella "gospel-like" tracks: "Town Hall", composed and lad by Tloubatla is a fair enough recording which remains faithful to the 1993 original (the 2001 version on "Sebai Bai" was edited to some degree). "Thandanani", composed and led by Mbadu, is a nicely done tune, with Tloubatla's soprano, Mangxola's tenor and Mbadu's alto voices blending perfectly.
A new recording of the South African classic "Mbube" (which was adapted in the USA as "Wimoweh", or, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight") is indeed very nicely done as well, as is "Sela Ndini", composed by Mangxola and led by Mbadu; the electric guitar riffs, the three-part harmonies and the vibration of the bass (as well as marvellous percussion by Veli Shabangu) make this track a joy.
The Mahotella Queens will be touring the UK from May to June 2006 as the guests for the legendary Ladysmith Black Mambazo - wherever you are, you have to visit this wonderful combination of talented people: the kings and the queens of South African music.
I rate this album 5 stars - simply marvellous!
